Strange noise around drive line while idle
 

After my 944 has been driven some and warmed up, when i disengage the the clutch amd put in nutral i hear a odd noise from under the car somewhere from shifter to rear end. It doesn't make this noise when until its been driven around. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks hope everyone has enjoyed your so so warm and not so wet summer lol.

Could it be something exhaust related? wild-guess. I had a rattling exhaust that would randomly make odd sounds

Throwout bearing or exhaust

Thank you all for your suggestions! I was also afraid it could be the throw out bearing too. I believe i may have dried it out when my clutch disc got stuck. Only after i replaced the master and slave did i find out lol. Well would anyone happen to know if it can be regreased by chance?

You will have to remove it either way (not really regreaseable) just replace it.

I regreased my throwout bearing but it was a bit of a pain.

Also i was just thinking and this could be your torque tube bearing also. Check clarks garage for how to check and test.

I don't think the TT bearing would make idle noise. Mine doesn't. Only a little under load

Torque tube could absolutely make noise at idle with the clutch engaged because its still spinning

I gotcha! Thanks a million. But when the clutch is engaged the noise "light cluncking" goes away. When its out of gear is when i hear it. But not all the time that's what's making me scratch my head some. Thank you all so much for the input!

When i say engaged what i mean is clutch out and in neutral. When you press the clutch to the floor the noise goes away is what im getting from your post. If the noise goes away almost instantly after pressing down the clutch pedal then its almost definitely the throwout bearing. Mine does exactly that and as far as im concerned its harmless.

Anecdotally ive heard a brand new throwout bearing has ended up being even louder than the old one for some people on the forums.

it could be the TO bearing or ur TT bearings :) only way is to ur a stetoscope :) on TT or Clutch housing

I could be wrong. But I would think it's more likely the TO bearing then. Because the TT bearing would probably make noise under load.

i rebuild myself about 4 of this.The maximum noise is at idle(the car dont have noise from wind and heard better) and on deceleration-pedal gas release like a zzz-zzz-zzz-zzz or ratle-ratle-ratle... in every gear but in the first two better to heard-i think the same reason-wind.

is a big procedure for rebuild and a little tricky but if you do a clutch job is hight racomanded,you will need from 2 to 4 hours to rebuild it

I am leaning toward TT bearings. Easy to test. If the throwout were noisy, light clutch pedal pressure (running, in neutral) should make the noise change. If not, torque tube.
