951 melt down

Had a major melt down in my '86' 951 last week end. The car was running well. Going uphill at about 80 mph in 4th, came on boost and blew out a large cloud of black and white smoke. I slowed down immediately but the car continued to run well. I continued about 2 more miles and slowed down in traffic. That's when it started smoking badly. Seems like it was mostly black smoke coming from under the car. I pulled into the next gas station and called AAA.
That night I pulled the drain plug from the oil pan and got about 1 1/2 quarts of coolant before a saw any oil.
Since then I have pulled the head. The head gasket looked good except for one crack at the #4 cylinder seal so I am thinking that initially I blew the head gasket. No coolant in the cylinders. I also pulled oil filter housing and all seals where in good condition.
My next step will be to pull the oil pan. I need to figure out where all that coolant came from.

Does anyone out there have any insight?

Does the turbo engine even have the liquid to oil cooler? I think the external oil cooler lines attach to the adapter plate that fits in place of the oil cooler housing found on the NA engines, but it does have an o-ring that may fail the same way as the NA setups leak, but it usually leaks oil into the coolant instead.

The big problem here is that your oil system was circulating coolant for who knows how long, meaning there's no telling what kind of shape the bearings are in. They will most likely all need to be replaced just to be sure. I know that's what the factory manual specifies whenever coolant gets into the oil.

If they have never been replaced (the head gasket and the oil cooler seals) then I am not so sure you can call it a ticking time bomb, I mean they are over 25yrs old.
