Post Need info on Minor 951 mods

My (newish) 951 is bone stock with the exception of a K&N filter
(done mainly for economical reasons). I am looking at getting
some APE Stage II chips and a Lindsey Boost Enhancer, the chips
first, then the boost enhancer. I will use the jetted banjo bolt for
several weeks before I get the LBE. I have searched the archives
and cannot seem to find any clear answers to a few questions I
have. Hopefully someone can answer them for me. Pardon my
ignorance regarding these issues, i'm trying to learn as much as I
can.

1. Reliability is the most important factor to me as the car is my
daily driver. Will these mods sacrifice reliability?

2. As far as I know I will want to experiment with jets until I am
just under 2 bar of boost at max to avoid overboosting, is this
correct?

3. Approx. how much will gas consumption go up?

4. Has anyone had any problems with getting their chipped/LBE'd
car smogged in California?

5. Anything else I should be aware of?

hey oi, first, congrats on the 951! i haven't been around pelican much except for the last two weeks or so.

i did the lbe first, then chipped it about two months later. i think the lbe made at least as much impact as the chips did. i went with weltmeister chips, btw.

yes, anytime you boost higher than factory, sure you are subjecting the car to more strain, and therefore premature wear/failure. but i don't think a lot more with just chips/lbe. big strain comes with aftermarket wastegate, boost controller & turbo.

gas mileage...don't have a clue, but it's sure to go down (mileage is not a concern of mine).

had no issues smogging my chipped car here in cali. enjoy your new ride!

I put an LBE on my otherwise stock 951 a few weeks ago. Other than the boost reaching the high side of 10psi rather than the low side, I don't think I've noticed much difference. From what I gather, this means my wastegate is still pretty strong. The LBE is designed to compensate for a weak one, no?

boost reading comes off an mechanical VDO gauge i installed

Running at higher boost will have no effect on gas mileage unless you use it. Then it'll produce more power and use more fuel doing it.

The boost enhancer will cause more fuel consumption because it calls for more boost at lower engine speed.

I bought my car when it had 90K on it. At 98K I put in a MAF, chips, K27, extrude honed intake, ported head, head gasket and began running 1.0 bar boost with a jet. It has 40 hours of track time on it.

Just this spring, I replaced rod bearings, installed a different oil pan, reamed the throttle body, increased the size of the boost tubes, and upped the boost to 1.1 bar with another jet. Car has 134K showing on the odometer now. I don't know whether I'll leave the 1.1 bar boost jet in for track events. The 1.0 jet gets me more thrills on the track than I need at times.

I do keep rpms below 6K when I run it hard. I don't know which is harder on the engine, high rpms or high boost. With the mods I have, I can keep up in a higher gear.

With the mods on the engine, I get the same highway mileage I always got. Gulps it faster if you push it, however.

Thanks for the reply gentlemen,

Black, Are you still in the south bay? Thanks for the congrats. My car is an '87 black/black (no black wheels though). I am glad to hear that the addition of chips and LBE will not strain my car too much, i'm a bit paranoid about it. Thankfully both mods are easy enough to reverse if I don't like them. Good to see that you are still on these boards.

MBuck,

From the research i've done I think the fact that you don't notice much difference with the LBE does indicate that your wastegate spring is working as intended. I could be wrong though. Where did you get your guage and where did you splice into the line? Did you mount the guage on the console?
