Engine swap questions.
Hey guys, I'm doing an engine swap this summer and I had a few questions and ideas I wanted to run by you guys.
I'll be installing the engine from my 84' n/a in to an 87' 944S body. My 84' was in an accident, and the repair bill would be just as high as buying a 968 so the engine swap is the more economical way to go. I loved the power output from my n/a engine and is perfect in just about everyway an n/a engine can be. So here we go: I believe that the installation will be pretty straight forward except for DME functions and possibly the engine mount locations. Fabricating a work around for the engine mounts is no problem but the dme could be tricky. I plan on using the dme out of the 84' simply because it's good to go with the 84' engine, and I don't feel like reprograming the eprom on the 86' dme for the 84' engine. Where I see a problem is in how the dme control all the new aspects that will come along with the new car. Such as controling the power windows, sunroof, possibly the gauges if their digital. The windows I'm sure that I can get to work, but the sunroof I understand is unlatched differently in the post 85' models. And I'm also not quite sure about the accuracy of the gauges or even if they will work. So I need help with that and I would also like to know if I'm missing anything else. Please help to make this all as smooth as possible. Thanks! -Tony |

This is a complete bolt in operation, no changes to engine mounts or anything else you mentioned.
The wire harness and connections for the 84 will need work to connect with the later harness and fuse box. Follow the wiring diagrams and DO NOT ATTEMPT without them!!!! You will have to do a little wiring adaption to get the tacho to work as I don't know if your DME and the later tacho are compatible. Apart from that, everything else should work. You should use the bigger alternator from the 944s, but if not the 84 one will work. Just check the wiring as you go. Use the 84 throttle cable. All you are doing is building a 87 944 2 valve...they did make a few of them. If the windows don't work now, it's nothing to do with the engine wiring. The sunroof does get a speed signal from the DME...you might need to disconnect that.

i dont really understand what you are doing....are you putting a 968 engine into the 84?or are you putting an 8v motor into the 944S body?why would you want to do that and lose the extra hp?

Thanks for the responce Bit. Very helpful, didn't think about that throttle cable.
For Andre and anyone else who I may of confused, I busted up my 84' 944 to the point where cost of repair is greater than the car's worth. I'm buying an 87' 944S body without the engine. So I'm simply installing my 84' n/a engine into the 87' 944S that is without an engine. Thaks guys! -Tony |
