Another no-start. Anyway to test the DME on an '86 944?
So I'm working on a car that someone already started working on. It belonged to a friend of mine, and one day it wouldn't start. He was going to start by checking the reference and speed sensors (I gave him some spares) and he broke one in the bracket. That's where he gave up. Anyway, I got the bracket off and the old sensor out, set the sensor height, put two new sensors in, and no start, no tach bounce. I tried switching the sensor plugs (since it was all apart when I started working on it) and still got nothing. Jumped the DME relay, and the fuel pump kicks on, but still no tach bounce. So now I think that I'm narrowed down to the DME. Am I missing anything?

There is a way to check the reference sensors to see if they are good or not. You will need a meter. Clarks garage will tell you how.

I figured it out. I accidentally swapped a bad sensor with another bad sensor. I didn't want to use my brand new ones yet because I was told by the previous owner that he "may" have dropped a bolt into the bell housing. I was using some used "good" sensors, just in case that bolt decided to make it's way up to the sensor and break it. I put the new sensors in and I had tach pulse, but still no spark. I popped the distributor cap off to find that the rotor was broke in half! Swapped rotors and it runs like a charm!

Quick question. Is it okay to cover the bell housing hole with a piece of gorilla tape?

Sure,
It may look better to use the rubber cap though. Product Information: 931-116-177-00-OEM OH, you meant the hole near the reference sensors----yes again John

Doesn't the clutch inspection cover "fall out"?

I should add the the bad sensor passed the resistance test, but I don't have an oscilloscope so I couldn't fully test their operation. I guess I'm just saying let that be a lesson, even if it passes the resistance test, don't rule it out!
And no, I never found that bolt, so who knows if it was ever actually in there. I guess I'll find out when I do the clutch! |
