Now I can appreciate my 944
I've been a bit bummed about my 85.5 NA not being a quick car. But this morning I decided to go get some coffee and drive without really having a plan.
Bakersfield has some nice roads and scenery and today was beautiful. I drove to Lake Ming and ended up in Kernville (just past Lake Isabella) I had never taken my 944 on the twisties. Boy, was it fun. Here are a couple of pics that I'd like to share. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Glad you found one of the true joys of a 944. Most of the roads I travel I don't need anymore horsepressure to have a good time. Of course more would always be welcome

IMO owning not only a 944 but a Porsche in general is about the twisties not the flat straight lines. I have plenty of friends with American muscle cars who have 230948209384 HP and a typical V8. Yeah they are fast and thrilling but they truly cant corner at all. I have had a variety of Porsche's and all of them handle great and are truly a blast to drive. I often do as you do, get some coffee then get in and go. Soon you will find your favorite roads and never get board of them.
Regards Dave

Very pretty car and location! I feel your pain about not being the fastest but our cars are a blast to drive!

Thanks for the awesome vibes. I do have a feeling of accomplishment being that this car almost got parted out after it lost the belts and bent the valves. I saw something in it and could see myself driving it. I just didn't think I would actually get the opportunity to make the drive I did today "just because"

Anyone that owns one of these cars and has not driven it through twisty 2 lane mountain roads has only scratched the surface of how good these cars are. It is a must have experience and basically what these cars were made for. I just can't respect the muscle car guys as they just have no idea. The smell of hot brakes and the sound of wide open throttle coming out of a banked switchback and hauling @ss in 2nd gear up a steep grade into the next adventure is pure awesomeness.

Not to mention, driving fast in a straight line is not nearly as challenging as driving fast through Swiss alps!

Some people can't even drive fast in a straight line! I actually saw a mustang driver swap ends and go ass end first off the road and into a cornfield trying to pass this Amish buggy on a 2 lane road. Was laughing and honking the whole way by.

Great pictures, and sounds like it was a great day!
You are right (as is everyone else). These cars really do shine on the winding, fast roads. They weren't designed for anything else. Jeff

Props for enjoying your Porsche the way it was meant to be driven

I did this very thing today in my 924. It felt great. Decided to see how much it had to give in the corners, and it gave a lot! I don't think I even touched 5th gear, I didn't have to!

Just a reminder for those who have lost the plot - a cracked dash is good for at least 25 hp...

I dunno...don't get me wrong, I LOVE my 944 (NA), but my Mustang ('09) blows it away--including in handling.

I would hope with 25 years to catch up, Ford could make a better car. Now compare your '09 Mustang to an '09 Porsche.
Yup. Plus, the Mustang may beat the 25 year old Porsche in speed and handling, but never in style. Jeff

To be fair, the only Mustang I like is the original Shelby GT350.
Jeff. Again.

![]() And the style...both very different; both are gorgeous cars, in my opinion. Since buying the porsche a couple months back, it's become my daily driver and the Mustang is my garage queen, which will be my daughter's first car in a few more years.

Just some good natured ribbing! I have to admit the Mustang has come a long way...that many years on the market in one form or another has to be good for something. Driving is (or should be) fun, and always half the equation of classic sports car ownership and the joy enthusiasts get from the hobby. It is my therapy, no joking there! Jeff
