Generally, if you open a can or bottle of brake fluid for a brake project or just to top off the fluid in your car, that can is good for about 6 months if the cap is on tight. If the cap hasn't been on the fluid, I would say anything over a few weeks would compromise it.

The real question is what is the ratio of the flange depth at the bottom of the cap, to the angle between each knurl in radians.

ultimately, I want to purge it with something that lacked moisture, to improve storage. I figure I'd need to cut some holes in the cap for some tubes. knowing how much space there is to work with before opening the can will minimize exposure to air, and I want to use a freshly bought can instead of having it sit around., and I don't have any junk cans laying around.

I appreciate this offer, but I hope its clear that a rough estimate is OK - don't sacrifice a fresh can for this!

If you are that concerned about it, just take a propane torch, crack the valve, point into the fluid can for a few seconds, put the top back on.
The propane will displace any moisture/air.
Just don't light it.
