Can new brake pad be too thick?

Hello all,

I'm in the process of replacing brake disks and pads and cannot insert the new front pad. Is it possible that the new pads are too thick? The rear pads went in just fine with a lot of room around them.

BTW, the pads are Axxis deluxe.

Did I do something wrong?

Thanks for your help,

Ngoc

You probably need to compress the caliper piston. It's pretty easy, i use a c-clamp with a piece of wood to prevent scratching but you can also do this with the handle of a hammer - just apply some leverage and the piston will sqeeze back in.

Open up the bleeder first, then compress the piston.

I have been using EBC yellowstuff pads on my primarily track car. I find that the paint makes the metal part of the pad too large fit into the slot. I just file down the paint and then put it in.

Hope this might help.

do not open the bleeder screw for this. If you do, you will have to bleed your entire break & clutch system.

Maybe what JRMock meant was open the lid of the master cylinder resivour. It helps, but you really just need to use pressure to spread the caliper open more.

Before driving the first time though, pump your breaks while sitting in the driveway to get them compressed back.

Actually, I meant the bleeder screw.

I used to open up the master cylinder also, but a well respected racer/mechanic told me not to push fluid and trash back up to the master cylinder. He said to use the bleeder screw, you're going to bleed the brakes anyway when replacing pads.

That being said, opening the master cylinder, and bleeding the brakes has always worked well for me in the past.

YMMV

Thanks everyone for replying,

I'm actually replacing the disk and the hose with stainless steel as well, so bleeding is a must. If you don't think that the pad is too thick then the disk must be too thick, I'm installing the cross drill from Sebro. Does anybody has the spec of the thinckness of the front disk for the 87 944S?

Thanks,

Ngoc

These are not for the 944S but probably very close. At least you have a reference...from a 87 944.

Pad thickness new is 13mm/2mm wear

Disc thickness new...19.1mm....18.5 after resurfacing

I doubt the 944S model is much larger in specs if any. Give these values a shot and go from there.

Thanks Dal for the info,

I think that is the problem, the new disks are 20.66 mm and the pads are 13 mm

brake pad fit

Hey I'm not sure if you got this problem but the pads are designed to be fitted in a specific order, one before the other. If I remember correctly the outside pad is fitted first then the caliper mover all the way to the inside and the other pad fitted. Look closely at the backing on the brake pads as you will see the outside of the caliper has a locating tab that presses on the centre of the pad and this pad needs to be fitted first. Hope this A. Makes sense and B. Helps. Cheers

After some research the disc for the 944 and 944S are the same so you have a thick rotor it appears. If you still wish to use them, turn them down to 19.1, approx;800 thousands overall.
