A/C Switch doesn't do anything

It was hot today and has been and my Comanche doesn't have A/C so I think its time to get my A/C in my 86, 944 working,
and I need some advice the guy I bought it from said it didn't work when he got it, but he had a used compressor put in it when the old one locked up and broke the belt, why he didn't get it recharged at that time is a mystery, but he didn't have it done.

when I hit the snowflake nothing happens, I'm not sure where to start at this point on it, it lights up but the switch will not stay in and if I hold it in it doesn't do anything either,

anyone have any idea where to start on this?

Check fuse for AC. Also, if it is low on refrigerant, it will not come on. It has a pressure switch.

took me a while to get back to the A/C problem.

I did check for a fuse ( thanks for the suggestion) not sure which is the A/C fuse, I checked fuse #17 which is labeled heat, it was ok, in fact checked all fuse's and all where good.

I found the clip missing on the heat flap under the dash and fixed that.

if I add freon the compressor should come on but the A/C switch itself will not stay in, I can hold it in and the amber light above will light but nothing else happens,

next i'm gonna check the sensor behind the glove box to see if the hose is still attached.

if any one has a suggestion please let me know.

thanks

Check to see if the AC clutch is getting any juice. There should be a plug in connector somewhere nearby. Check with a multimeter. Check to make sure connections are plugged in. Check connections on receiver/dryer also. It has a pressure switch there with more plugs. Should be 12v between hot side and ground.

Sounds like you may have a bad AC switch on dash also.

Thanks Lawrence,

I checked for voltage and had it everywhere, tried jumping low pressure switch on rec/dryer and "viola" the compressor kicked on and away she went I put in two cans of freon in and it got cold inside the car, oh yeah I used a pen cap to hold A/C switch in, the compressor wont stay on without the jump so I assume it needs more freon.
