It's alive!!!

I've not be a faithful steward as I have neglected the 944 for over 2 years since the fire. The fire was caused by failure of the cam housing gasket on labor day, 2010. All I've done so far is replace the gasket, new timing and balance shaft belt, repair some vacuum lines and add gas.

There's a lot more to go, but to hear it run was something that has enlightened my day.

Thanks John,

I was a bit skeptical about the ability for the car to run. Today I double checked all the timing marks and adjusted the balance belt to where I wanted it (sound and feel). It had a bit of chuffing noises to begin, the lifters were quite noisy and it ran and smelled like crap. It took some time for it to quit smoking and quiet down.

I know I got off really easy not having to drain the gas after two years, but there wasn't much in there and what was, still ignited. Luck. It took about 20 minutes for the lifters (never could get them to pump up out of the car) to shut up, and I did get them out of order, again. (matters not, they haven't been in the same cam housing all their lives either) The injectors finally shut up around the time the smoke dissipated. She purrs like a kitten now.

I consider myself lucky not having to have done more. Going to get the new tags and get it inspected tomorrow.

How did everything "magically" quiet down?

What I recon, was that the lifters behaved normally when the oiling system provides what the lifters want, oil pressure. Same for the injectors with better/newer fuel. I just let it run, knowing it was not going to make a financial difference to me if any component failed to respond. I wasn't going to put more into it.

I cranked the motor over by hand, with the plugs in, and it was the same resistance as I experienced when I put the lifters in a different cam housing a few years ago. Again, it rotated fairly easy, as if 1/2 the plugs were out. I knew the lifters cycled well in each cylinder prior, and insured they would in different positions if they were mixed up. That was the easiest part. Hearing clatter upon start up was what I did not expect.

So, oil pressure and new gasoline is my answer.

This one was meant to run.

Run some seafoam through it and squirt some Lucas in the cam housing.
