Engine Bay Sound
So, out of curiosity I took a short video of my engine running at idle, I think it sounds healthy but I thought perhaps a more experienced ear would be able to detect something amiss, if any. Porsche 944 Engine Running - YouTube
yes the car needs a wash ![]() EDIT: Now that I listened to the video... am I going crazy re-listening to the video or does anyone else hear a *hissss* sound near the intake manifold? Like a vacuum leak... i can't even see the manifold gaskets, are they supposed to stick out under the edges?

Very nice!!
I think you are just showing off an exceptional example of an engine and work done. I put on the headphones and listened twice to the video. I might have heard the sound you hear but I cannot tell if it is a vacuum leak. mytrplseven and another member made an intake pressure leak detector. You might search. Basically it is just a PVC pipe and tire valve you can press against the throttle body using soapy water to find bubbles/leaks No, I cannot see the intake gaskets under the intake manifold on my '87--I did the AOS seals and had it removed a couple of months ago. Again, very nice. Watch out that you do not over oil the K&N filter. Light oil and let it settle/dry on paper before you install. A few threads about the problem somewhere. I took mine out and just use dry OEM filters now. J_AZ

Thanks for the feedback! Sooner or later I'm going to attempt to clean the ICV, so that'll be a good time to replace the intake gaskets. Thanks for the K&N tip, I haven't had to oil it yet since the filter only has a couple thousand miles on it. I've just been paranoid lately thinking something bad is going to happen, and today I noticed my coolant level is lower and found a puddle of something on the garage floor.. :-/

![]() Interesting how is sounds so different when you move the microphone (in the camera) around. Don't drink whatevers on your garage floor. Lol. I've read about the K&N oiling issue. As AZ said don't over oil it. I think the intake can suck the oil in sometimes. It's probably more of a problem with turbo or twin-turbo cars (more pressure). Don't know anything about it though. I did however notice one problem in your video. Not loud enough! Happy Holidays! Last edited by FrenchToast; 12-12-2012 at 04:42 PM.. |

Okay, so I filled up the overflow tank about halfway with some prestone 50/50 (phosphate silicate whatever free) coolant I found in the garage, then I realized I think my coolant has always been too low...
![]() ![]() ![]() Wtf is this? I thought it was coolant/anti-freeze at first.. but it seems too much like.. well water. Too watery? It should smell sweet right? Yet on my finger it smelt like nothing, I wasn't adventurous enough to taste it. Smelt inert, like water. So maybe it was just water off the A/C system which I ran for awhile today, first time in a while. Seems like a lot though... and ignore the obligatory one drop of oil ![]()

Oh man...What now?

Looks like cat pee to me. LOL Your engine sounds OK. That slight tapping sound used to freak me out until I heard it on every other 944 I've listened to. I think the sweet smelling antifreeze de-icer is glycol. The ground crews would spray it all over the wings of the aircraft in snow/icy winter conditions on our flight line.

You're the third person to say it was urine. Lol. My current guess is that was just water mixed with the top layer of dirty green "garage floor juice gunk"

You can check for "pee" leaks by renting/deposit a coolant pressure tester at AutoZone.
I used it this summer to find a drip by the radiator temp sensor. Use only 10 pounds of pressure or you may open up the rubber seam on the radiator between the plastic and metal. J_AZ

K&N:dust of with paint brush to remove excess dirt, then wash with lurk warm water -let dry at least 24 hrs-spray several thin films of oil -lay on paper towel until excess oil has run down then install. Most peoples has a tendency to clean their K&N to often which is not a good practice.___May I say something without hurting your feeling

Car sounds fine, but you're missing the little sticker above the cap showing plug location, and maybe some of these to help the underhood bling: Porsche 944 Zinc Fender Hardware Kit $16.50

It's dirty? I know a lot needs cleaning, especially the underside of the engine, so much gunk I have been cutting through. I've been trying to focus on getting everything working properly though first! Soon as I get home from work I'm going back to removing the oil pressure sender, it has been pegged but now it's started to leak and making everything gross!

This is one opinion from a vendor: quote "oil pressure switch --we will not sell the type from URO---- it's crap!" Pelican sells the FAE ---OK for an economy or VDO the best. There is another choice but I cannot tell you where to buy it--web?? Made in Italy. Very accurate, feels heavy-quality made. Made in Italy. Stopped my jumpy needle syndrome. ![]() J_AZ
