DME Temp Sensor replacement

What is the procedure for replaceing the DME Temp Sensor. What has to be moved to get to it and what do I need to look out for.

Loosen the large clamps at both ends of the J-boot. Disconnect the J-boot from the throttle body and the AFM and move it aside a few inches. Remove the DME connector. Use a deepwell 19mm socket to remove the DME sensor. Reverse to install and reassamble.

Time needed is about 20 minutes. You also might want to replace the DME sensor washer.

If working on a cool engine, will any coolant seep from the sensor well during replacement?
TIA

yes some coolant will come out place a rag around sensor before removal

Just a small amount will out; a couple of paper towers will do the trick. Its better to have the new unit ready to be installed once the old sensor is removed.

Do it with the engine cold. It is a very easy job. Use a nice deep socket to get the old sensor off as stated. There's a washer? lol I don't even think I have one on there. Only a small amount of coolant came out, just enough to make a small puddle in that crevice of the block. Two blue towels took care of it.

- Well I followed Gaw's and Nolan's directions and now have a shiny new Bosch DME Temp Sensor installed; as well as a new washer.
- Took 25 minutes total.. J-Boot is the hardest thing to deal with.
- Engine was cool ( ~100F) and only about 2 ounces of coolant weeped as I
loosened the old sensor with an open 19mm wrench.
- Old sensor had a patina of coolant stain that must've made any readings damn near impossible for the DME.
- New sensor seems to have eliminated the rich smell of rocket fuel exhaust. YAY!

Head temp sensor is next...
Cheers!

Virginia - did replacing the Temp Sensor improve the drivability of your car.

Gawernator 01-21-2013 12:54 PM

I know you asked Virginia but I also recently replaced mine. It definitely did make cold operation smoother.
