Question 944 S weight - 3528 lbs ?!

Well this is my first post , and I'm going to try to stay on topic here . My 87 S seems to be very over weight. Even with the options it has, 3500 + seems high to me.

has power seats , mirrors ,windows ,steering , a.c., sunroof , cruise control .

no power locks , and no rear sway bar .

i have curbed the weight a little ( pun intended ) by...
rear seat delete,
rear wiper delete ,
rear hatch motor delete ,
carpet and all insulation gone ,
back interior panels gone,
stereo , including 2 stock speakers , four aftermarket speakers , two tweeters , a head unit and an amp.

I'm familiar with what else can lighten it up ( except wheels ) , and have a picture of whats going to go whether its this weekend , or this summer , but what I'm wondering is mainly ...

Why is it so heavy !?

Thank you in advance for your answers !

Andrew N.

where did you get that weight from? did you weight the car first? your car won't be anything near that, I should think.

the S is not that much different to the base 944, biggest difference being the engine. i weighed my 944 (with 1/4 tank of gas, no upper back seat or spare tyre) on scales used to weigh vehicles for air transport:

FL 295kg FR 250kg
RL 350kg RR 310kg

total front 545kg
total rear 660kg

All up weight 1205kg (2657 lbs)

Check out these 944 test weights and compare them to the S2, 951 and 968

Has it actually been weighed at that? Something would have been wrong with the scales, not calibrated properly, in the wrong units, whatever.

That number sounds like it might be the GVR writted on the sticker under the hood. This is the manufacturer's tested gross vehicle weight, the maximum load it can carry including itself.

IIRC a 944S weight should be a little under 2900. Forget if that is dry or wet.

Take care!

That does seem excessive. However my guess is that a lot of the weights given by the factory were with non optioned cars. Many 951s that I've seen have often been around the high 1300kgs even slightly over 1400kgs. Still, that's only 3000lbs. 3500lbs is crazy. That's 1600kgs! Can't imagine how that's possible?? Sure you don't have a body in the back?

Maybe it was a drug runners car and is filled with coke!
Sorry, couldn't help it.
Seriously though, get those scales checked or go to a different one.

Per my tech manual it shows curb weight of 2734lbs but a total per axle load of 3417 lbs. I am not sure the difference between curb weight and axle load but I am assuming 3417 is the weight you are looking for. That is the sports package. The standard is 2822 and 3527 respectively.

I think Cocaine only comes with the Mexican package.

Curb weight - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quote:
Curb weight (US English) or kerb weight (UK English) is the total weight of a vehicle with standard equipment, all necessary operating consumables (e.g., motor oil and coolant), a full tank of fuel, while not loaded with either passengers or cargo.

This definition may differ from definitions used by governmental regulatory agencies or other organizations. For example, many European Union manufacturers include the weight of a 75 kilogram driver to follow European Directive 95/48/EC.[1] Additionally, organizations may define curb weight with fixed levels of fuel and other variables to equalize the value for the comparison of different vehicles.

Typical 944S weight < 2900lbs

That's not right!
The listed spec weight is ~ 1280kg or 2828lbs without fuel or options.

Mine weight in at 2857lbs with limited options, no ABS or airbags.

Check title for sure!

Later.....

No way it can have 3500lbs but you would be surprised how much heavier it is than what is written in the title or on the web. I was shocked when i weighed mine.
The specs on mine are:
'86 euro 944 with
-manual steering,sunroof,windows,mirrors
-removed rear seat back ,hatch motor, spare wheel and jack ,all sound deadening
-early sport seats
It weighed in at 1180kg with 1/4 of gas , i was hoping for at least 50kg less than that
On the porsche website it says 1210kg for a stock '86 944 , in my title it's 1280kg .
All the weight reduction i did i calculated at about 100kg so it should be close with what the title says but my car already started as a bare bones 944 from the factory with no power steering or a/c , it only had the basic stuff like power windows, mirrors, sunroof and 4way drivers seat. Take into consideration that the bumpers are also lighter than US models.
Taking all that into consideration i expect a US 944 to be about 100kg heavier ,that puts it at around 1350-1380kg (about 3000lbs) for a fully loaded 944 8v n/a
