Mystery Keys

My 944 came with maybe 6 keys.

2 black plastic keys w/ crest for ignition . easy enough
3 generic metal keys, 1 opens the hatch and gas cap the other two apparently have no fuction.

1 all metal key with a Porsche crest, wtf is this for? It doesn't fit anything but, you'd think it was important since it's got a crest stamped on it.

I haven't found one that fits the alarm hole yet.

Am I missing something here?

your car may have had the weird lug locks that required a key

On mine.... I have one key for hatch, ignition, locks, glove box (I think), and a different smaller key for the lock on the lug nuts. That is it.

I had/have the weird key locking lug nuts. Don't use them but they're in the garage if you want xD however the key doesn't have a crest on it. It's a silver key that says "PORSCHE" in script diagonally across the head.

Ill take some pictures wen I get home. I've tried them all everywhere and the key that fits the hatch is not one of the 3. Maybe the lock was changed at some point or was rekeyed. I didn't think the locking gas cap was original. But those two things use the same key which is none of the ones pictures in the manual pic. Extra metal
Porsche remains a mystery.

Isn't the alarm key supposed to be the same as the ignition key?

Yes. There's only two keys. The locks/ignition and then the key for locking lug nuts. Exception is early model 944's had a separate glove box key, god knows why

There must be a lot of variation on keys. My 83 glove box, hatch, and ignition all take the same key. The alarm key is MIA, but is keyed differently. The owners manual states there is 2 separate keys.....I don't know why. Someday I'll rekey it.

Must be done aftermarket, I'm going off of the Porsche owner's manual and what I have seen personally

The Euro manual says there are separate keys for the glove box and everything else. I thought American cars had a separate key for the alarm. I'll check the manual tomorrow, since its 18 degrees here now and I ain't going outside

I do know my ignition key doesn't fit the alarm.

Factory Alarm key on 911SC and the 944's / 951 models should be a separate key. Nightheart is correct!

If you are a member of the Porsche Club of America, get in touch with your local representative for information on how to get keys for your car...they require a VIN and some other paperwork. PCNA usually handles this function and may require contacting Germany.
If my memory serves me right.

Good luck.

Thank you. I will check with PCA and try to get an original key. Now my question is, why is there a separate key for the alarm?

I do not know why, this would be a good question for the Panorama folks to answer in their respective Technical section. In the back of the Panorama is a representative's name for the 944, if they still have one. Address your letter to that person, Email will work too.

The only thing that comes to mind is I always turn off the alarm before opening the doors/hatch on the 944. On the 911SC, I have to very slowly open my door a little (just enough) to be able to turn the alarm off...if not all hell breaks loose. LOL

Hope this helps and good luck. Let me know if you need the PCNA person's name and I will obtain it for you.

The keys in question. I'm thinking maybe the silver rusty Porsche key might be glovebox since someone said the early cars had their own key for that.

The keys at 7 and 9 o'clock ONLY fit in the ignition.
The generic key at 3 only opens the hatch and gas cap.

The keys at 10,12 and 6 don't fit anywhere.

It's clusterf*$tastic.
