with apologies to the Beatles:
the Magical Mystery tach is going to drive me insane.... going to drive me insane, it'll do it today! the upshift light works (as far as i know) the fuel economy guage works fine. but the tach goes all over the place. tapping on it doesn't help. i can be at redline and it will show 2000, 3000, 4000, 1000... whatever it wants to. before i go ripping apart my 944, is this most likely a corroded electrical connection, or is it a mechanical problem and I should get this one repaired? any place on the east coast that repairs them well? thanks! obin

Eratic tach is somewhat common - though usually they don't work for a minute or two and then "pop" to life.
I would check your electrical connections at the instrument panel ground (behind instrument panel), electrical contacts on the panel itself, and coil wires. Failing those, you may be one of the unfortunate ones that gets a bad tach. No place that I know of on the east coast rebuilds VDO, I know pelican does it, but I have no idea what they charge. out here
There's a VDO shop in Hollywood for us west coasters.
There's a bit on VDO clock repair in Paragon...maybe the tach is similar? or as we say in Arkansas: Simelar?
