rear hatch threaded holes - what for?

87 944 na

I was always wondering what these two holes are for - they are on the interior of the rear hatch body sheet metal under the carpet, and are threaded on the inside. if anyone knows off the top of their head...

The way they're made it would be more structurally sound for something to thread into them from the bottom, not the top. Do they go all the way through? If not, there's probably a bolt coming up from the bottom that holds sometime important to the bottom of the car.

Did we not JUST go through this exact question a few weeks ago? Or is this deja vu?

Take care,

well, now a google search with terms

"rear hatch threaded holes porsche 944"

returns - guess what - this thread.

to close the circle, i'll drop the link (... no pun intended) to Ederd's original thread ...

what were these designed for?

... which I only assume is original. It'd be interesting to find out how many times this has been asked since the beginning of time, but perhaps someone else can do that.

Option FC88 (Flux Capacitor) was only available for '86 to '87 models and was then removed from sale by the factory. However, the boffins at Porsche decided to keep the mounts for a new tri-phasic plasma-conduit for a warp drive option they were thinking of marketing.... This unfortunately never made it to the option catalogue....

They are for shackle tie downs. With the glass hatch you need to seriously restrain anyone locked in the trunk so they stay hidden under the cover.
