Engine whine found. Now what?

I have a whine in my engine, follows the RPM. I loosened the belts a little and it seems to have helped. But it was still there so went in with a stethoscope and I am almost 100% certain it is coming from the water pump. listened through the cover and when i revved the engine it was very loud in there.

Question. What does this mean? Should I go in and look at it? I got a rebuilt one from 944online back in 2010. Driven 5k miles since then.

Also, my car is getting a little hot. When it's hot outside and it's just idling the temp gauge goes up the the last white line. never past though.
I changed my coolant today and burped the system till a steady stream of pure coolant gushed out of the bleed screw.

Any suggestions for what to do?

Waterpumps typically screech when they're going out, not whine. It's that distinctive "bearing going out" noise. Plus when they're in late stages, they also often weep.

If your rebuild only has 5K miles on it, it's likely still OK. The whine is probably the belts.

Did your car just start running hotter or has it always run at these temps?

Don't want to threadjack, but Mike, where would you notice coolant at if the WP is leaking?

A Water Pump that is just starting to leak will come out the very bottom of the belt cover. Stands to reason Coolant drops down hill.

Cheers,
Larry

Hmm... May be changing the WP when I do the belts this summer. Weird since it's a pretty new genuine pump

It's probably the balance belt, in which case don't worry. It's ok if it whines, just means it a little too tight. I keep might like that.

The wp will just start spraying coolant all over the place. I've gone through many, even though they were fairly new.

As I said on RL your water pump impeller may have walked and is grinding. I have had one come loose on me but it thankfully just spun.

I'm guessing that in this case, if the impeller came off the car would not be cooling at all.

So my vote is still belt whine.

Are you leaking coolant anywhere? Are your fans coming on? You may have a bad thermostat assuming you're not leaking.

I don't buy from 944online anymore, got tired of them messing up and costing me hundreds of dollars. Plus I've been treated like crap with them. I remember asking them about possibly doing a short-stroke conversion in a 911 (which many people do) and not only was their info completely wrong, but they felt the need to capitalize on how stupid that idea was. Not to mention their prices suck.

At 15K miles your WP should have a long way to go yet,if it's not leaking or causing no overheating issues leave it be.

Right. It's just I found this gooey green stuff under the engine a few days ago. It was like coolant, but it was neon green slime lol. And my coolant level seems to still be good to me.

mikepellegrini and mueller944s2;

For some reason Pelican didn't register me subscribing to this thread so I've been missing out.

It sounds like people feel it's the belts. I'll go and check on those one of these days.

The car has been running this temp more or less since the rebuild I think. It's hard to remember really. It seems to have gotten slightly better since i changed the coolant, but then again, it's been cold here.

I installed a new thermostat, also from 944online, when I put in the waterpump and did the belts. When i installed the thermostat I tried and tired to get it all the way in so that the c-clip would go into the groove that's there. But that didnt happen. So I got it as far in as I could and installed the c-clip so it was pressing against the walls. Was this a mistake? Was it really supposed to go aaaall the way and lock into that groove? Could that be why it's running hot, maybe more fluid is coming in than supposed to, or less?

If you weren't able to push the thermostat in far enough to fit the circlip in the groove, then it sounds like you have the wrong thermostat for that waterpump.

Hopefully John_Az or someone will come on and explain the difference.

Basically, there are two styles, old and new (not related to the "turbo style" pump). One has a larger-deeper shelf that the thermostat sits on, the other has a more shallow shelf. The two thermostats for the different applications are not interchangable.

If your car isn't cooling properly, that's probably why. It may not be opening all the way.

that makes sense. I've been fearing i have to go back and change that. Sigh. I got the rebuilt WP with thermostat and everything from 944online so I was counting on it being the right one. I'm pretty sure I got the new one, with the wider pulley...

944online randomly sent me one a while back for no reason...AND IT WAS STILL THE WRONG PART! When I get home I'll check to see if I have an extra one.
