Chasing down a hard start
Okay, so my 944 has never /not/ started. (double negative) However, it always has to some extent taken awhile to start. On Ideola's garage I saw a video of the stock starter taking 1.5 seconds to start. I know it's not like a brand new car, starting almost immediately. But my 944 can take 2-3.5 seconds to start up, even four seconds. The thing is, it's not always. Sometimes it starts up in a second, sometimes it turns over multiple times before firing. I used to think it was worn electrical components, or some other issue, but I have replaced so much on the car I'm running out of ideas. The only things in the engine bay that aren't new (to my knowledge) The ignition coil, starter (right) and there's my alternate theory that something is wrong with the fuel pressure regulator, leaving voids in the fuel rail and that's why it takes longer to start?
Dist cap/plugs/wires all new no vacuum leaks (all new hoses/seals) new fuel hoses, fuel pump, fuel filter has maybe 10,000 miles or so on it. Air filter is clean K&N. Changing brand of gasoline wasn't it either, lol. Guesses? Edit: Oh, Injectors are all rebuilt/ with new seals as well |
Gawer,
Because you said it is intermittent, and you have put in new NGK plugs and have newer plug wires: If your battery is newer... If your charging system is keeping the battery fully charged.... If you do not have abnormal drain on the battery overnight---Clarks says normal drain from the radio and alarm is up to 45ma----(my drain is about 10ma with only radio presets) ...and I know you have cleaned all the main battery cable ends... When you get into the car to start ------do not touch the gas pedal--just turn the key If the car fires up "normally" without the longer delay you may just have a typical 944. J_AZ |

The only time I remember a non start was a dead fuel pump relay, swapped out for my spare and it fired in seconds. Have you got good voltage @ your new fuel pump?,don't think it would be a FPR issue, not a very common fault. |
Haven't checked voltage but I don't have problems with it actually starting. Started pretty quickly today but I notice it seems like it turns over, then there's almost like a pause as it starts up in a slow way then boom fully running. Weird...

Have you considered the check valve in the fuel pump? If it's defective, all the fuel drains out of the fuel lines when the car sits and takes a while for the fuel to get to the injectors.
