Waterpump?

So I have 85.5 944 that I got for free. The car was running and being drivin by my cousin but he parked it and it has been sitting for a couple years. I have been told by a bunch of people I need to change the water pump and timing belt/ rollers before thinking about trying to start it up. I would like to get this thing running at least. What I need to know is which water pump and which timing belt kit do I need? The reason I ask is because some of them say they are for my correct year but others say if you are replacing the waterpump on an 85.5 944 you need to get the 87 pump with the can chain guide and if you gut that one then the pully size changes so you have to get a different belt kit? Super confused a little help would be great!

All you have been told is correct, but before you race in and spent $$$$$,pull the front covers and check the belts,if they aren't oily, dry, worn, loose or cracked you can run it up.
If you did change the pump you would replace what you have ,your car should have the upgraded one anyway,if not you can buy the upgrade kit.
PLEASE dump the old fuel and check the condition of your fuel lines before you turn the key.
Best to get it running and driving before you spend,it may not be what you want or like or could just be a money pit.
If the car is a good one theres a lot of stuff to refresh if its been sitting, that you can find out on HERE.
Report back,cheers

A free 944, wahoo!

If your plan is to get the car running and then evaluate it I would change out just the timing/balance shaft belts. They don't cost much and it doesn't take that long. You can inspect the rollers when changing the belts.

You don't want the old belts to break while you're working out the bugs and if you decide to sell her, you don't want the belt to break while someone is looking at it or taking it for a test drive.

If you're committed to keeping the car and you're up for spending the cash, do the complete FOES. There's also a list of things to go through when waking up a car that's been sitting for awhile.

Good luck with your car.

Funny how I just said most of that Bruce, only change the belts as I described, takes 30-40 mins max to get the covers off.
The OP can read up/ask and make a discussion,if he has a patchy past history on the belts or servicing fine but it appears he just wants to get it running.
Too much belt change "must do" cr#p goes on with these cars IMO,after all they aren't made of string, cheers.

You have to look at the waterpump that is now on the car.
One clue would be a white plastic "nose"--the "blockoff plate", sticking out of the front. Sometimes there will also be a black rubber cap covering the outlet. (This was for a cooling hose on a turbo)
The other clue is a chrome belt guard on top of the waterpump--but the belt covers have to be removed to see it.

YES! Always get the "updated turbo waterpump with chrome belt guard"!

with the can chain guide and if you gut that one then the pully size changes so you have to get a different belt kit?

The OLD pumps used a 32mm cam belt roller-----The "updated pump uses a 46mm cam belt roller. So if you have an "updated" waterpump, you have to get the belt kit for the "late", updated waterpump with the 46mm cam belt roller

Super confused a little help would be great!
Now lift the hood and check for the White "block off plate" on the nose of the WP.

If the car still has the OEM old pump and you change it to the "updated" pump, you will also have to get these parts...

I highlighted the above advice because I recently found out that it was a roller seizure that caused my engine to total itself. I had originally thought that the belt was perished and the teeth stripped due to fatigue...it appears I was wrong. The lower cambelt roller seized solid and locked up, so the belt stripped teeth and the valves got bent. So, I for one cannot stress how a good examination of these parts is vitally important, especially when a car has been laid up for a long period. The damage is done in seconds..

To be honest, a lot of poor advice can be given by owners who have never experienced a belt failure, with these engines it is always an expensive and time-consuming exercise to get them operational again. However, if you give everything a good examination before starting the engine, you should be OK, but replace as soon as possible and don't think you will always be able to dodge the bullet...not being dramatic but realistic here from personal experience.

All the best and good luck with your 'free' 944
