ground wire
does anybody know where the ground wire for the radio is? my wiring is really screwy in my stereo and i don't wanna pull it out to trace back to find the wire. i'm havin' some static problems when the car is on so i figured it's a bad ground or something.

Is should be there with all of the other stereo wires. My 83 had a brown wire that served as the ground. Good luck!

Yep. it is the brown wire.
Have you changed spark plug wires or your alternator recently? AFJuvat

Isolate the static. On an old Blau, if the static is when you turn the radio dials you can use an electronic cleaner/oil combo spray bought at Radio Shack or Frys electronics ect. Remove the radio and take off the outer covers and spray the volume/tone/balance pods. Try to get the cleaner inside through crimp points. Spray contact points at the end of the shaft if there are any and then the same for the station dial. Let dry completely. If you've gone to this trouble and have a cassette deck clean the head with head cleaner. Use Q tips to get more gunk out and detail the cover and presets. I have replaced the cassette belts and regreased the unit but s__t happens and don't advise.

i'm sorry, but maybe i wasn't clear...i dont' need to know where the brown(ground) wire connects to the back of the radio..i need to find where it connects to the chassis of the car. i recently hooked up a brand new blaupunkt radio and it gives me static and someone said that cleaning your ground contact will probably fix it. also, when i turn the radio up in the higher volumes, when a lot of bass or treble hits, it skips the radio or cuts out for a second. when the car is off, the static problem goes away. the only time i get static is on FM and not on a cd. and, no, i haven't replaced my spark plugs or alternator lately. any suggestions appreciated.

There is a very inexpensive device called a "suppressor" that used to be sold at most automotive stores and other places like Radio Shack. Not to bore anyone but in electronic terms it is a "choke" (a coil of wire) that goes between the "hot" lead and the radio. It is used to eliminate "spark noise". Not difficult to install.
I assume the static changes with the speed of the motor. If it is ignition, it will sound like a fast "tic..tic..tic..." If not, you may have a problem with your alternator (sounds like TV static). Try cleaning your contacts first, wherever the ground connects to the chassis. It isn't really important where this connection is made. Mine is grounded to the top of the "transmission tunnel". Works fine. Good luck Bob S.

The radio is grounded to the lug behind the instrument panel.

so, that means i have to take off the dash to access the ground wire?
as for the static, i realized today that some of my stations come in some of the time. i think i'm just getting a weak signal and i remember someone mentioning about an antenna booster once. does my 924S have one? if so, how do you hook it up? i have 2 brown wires that aren't hooked up in the back and i thought maybe that was the booster. i have no place to plug them in though. any ideas on that? |
