Am i supposed to run that cold?

After an hour of driving @4000 RPM I feel like the motor should be running warmer that..

Consider yourself lucky! Seriously!

Usually they run hotter than that. There are so many factors involved, from an overly-rich mixture to faulty headlight ground wiring messing with the gauge reading. Where to start? How do you know the gauge is accurate?

Yes!

Most of these cars are plagued with over heating problems by 87 944 runs at the first temp mark and I have never touched a thing in the coolant system out of fear. Any member here will tell you about all the issues of these cars running hot. There are 2 temp options for the thermostats in these cars chances are you have the lower temp option and a good water pump. As said above consider yourself very lucky.

Regards
Dave

well it does move, right after I got off the freeway and didn't have the cold air blowing on you can watch it rise and drop and the thermostat opens. Im not sure if its actually accurate or not

I've had the same question..
Purchasing an infra-laser temp gun and measure the upper block temp at the sensor location.. (Driver side @ Cyl #2)

You probably just need to clean the grounds to the gauge!

Well this morning I made that same drive, after I got off the freeway and stopped at the coffee shop, the guage increased to 50%, so I am kind of taking it as the motor isn't over heating (especially after driving it for an hour @4k) and that its within tolerance

It's good! I chased temp problems and coolants leaks for years. Finally, on my third engine that I pulled from a wrecked car, it reads almost rock steady at the middle mark. I have NO clue what happened but now I'm terrified to touch anything in the cooling system. If yours is at the middle mark consider yourself very lucky!

If you had dirty wiring the gauge would probably read higher, not lower
