Assorted questions

87 944 NA

1. Anyone have pics or comment about adapters they made for the rear jack point (ala Rich Sandor)? That is the funny shaped body frame hole close to the control arm.

2. Any instructions out there for the oil pan bracket (KLA) installation?

3. What is the height of a typical transmission itself (I don't mean from the ground)?

4. How much should the car shake when the last bolt holding the tranny is removed?

5. If I get the Sears 2-or-3 arm gear puller will it fit with two arms on the ball joint? Reason I ask : the puller has parts that stick out up top even if you use two arms.

For a jacking point on the rear of the car, I always use the front of the rear control arm where it attaches to the body (just in front of the rear wheels). It's a nice wide, flat spot.

I measured my spare 951 transaxle. It's 15" across the bellhousing opening - 17" to the floor. The other end is about 9" off the floor.

It just fits getting it out. The biggest obstacle is the spare tire holder. You just have to jockey it back and forth to get it out.

The car shouldn't really shake at all taking out the last bolt. When you're removing the last bolt, you've gotta have a transmission jack holding the transaxle stable (I just use a floor jack with a piece of plywood on it - works great). Then with all the bolts out (and the coupler removed and everything else disconnected) you lower it a bit, then pull it backwards - jockeying it backwards and forwards while lowering. It's a very tight fit. When the back end clears the spare tire hump, then you're clear and the rest is relatively easy.

I wouldn't tolerate any shaking at all. If the car shakes, it's not stable enough for me to get under. I had a friend who had an arm crushed working on his car - and the guy is a great mechanic. I always have a couple sets of jackstands as well as extra jacks.

What are you doing with your ball joints? rebuilding them? If you're rebuilding them, a 3 jaw gear puller works great to hold the assembly together when you're fitting the circlip. I've also used a C-Clamp, which worked ok. But the 3 Jaw puller worked better.

If you want a proper installation, KLA recommends taking it to a shop.

Of course in addition to the $200 price of the supports, the shop will charge another $500 or more to install.

I do not know the mileage on the engine but if over 120K more needs to be done.

The WYAIT (While You Are In There) items would be to change the rod bearings and get new rod nuts.
Check the oil pickup tube for cracks and change the "O" ring seal.

After researching a number of references, the common opinion for doing a clutch job and removing the transaxle from inder the car, stated, "raise the car at least 18" above the floor".
I did that and bought a small transmisstion roll-around jack from Harbor Freight and used that to remove the transaxle from the car. As I maneuvered it out the back, the funny part was the last 6 inches as I rolled it out via the cut-out in the lower pan where the exhaust tail pipe protrudes.
After the job was finished, I sold the floor jack on Craigslist for near what I paid for it. It was the easiest way I could find to handle an imposing job.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

yes in retrospect, of COURSE the car should not shake - bad question! thanks for the tips anyway.

hopefully just detaching them and keeping them intact to get at the oil pan.
