Which Parts should I sell off my 944

I've got a 99% complete 87 N/A and it's still running and driving but the mechanic said it doesn't have much longer.

Which parts should I take off and sell? I'm trying to get this thing completely tore down so I can make enough to buy a new 944 that's in good condition.

"Doesn't have much longer" What does that mean?

If it's a junker you wont bother to fix you're not going to get much for parts. Even if its nice you won't make much off an 87 NA.

Wheels might be worth a couple hundred bucks. Body parts depending on condition.

The clutch plate was broken and the Balance shaft seals are loose. He said it'd cost more to fix than it would to buy a new 944.

Other than that it's in great condition

You would make more by far to sell it as-is.

The work it needs is a couple weekends and $300 for any 944 enthusiest.

$1500-2000 tops. I wouldn't condemn a car just for a bad clutch and loose balance shaft seals. Those issues are pretty minor in comparison to other things that could be wrong.

You say the car is running and driving but your mechanic diagnosed it as having a "broken" clutch plate? Precisely what is a "Broken" clutch plate? What symptoms does it have? What lead him to his diagnosis?

Did the mechanic also, by chance, suggest your muffler bearings were on the way out as well? And then offer to take the car off your hands for a few hundred dollars?

A clutch doesn't have a plate, per se. It has a disc and a pressure plate. If the pressure plate was "broken" (broken fingers or something) your car would not likely move. So when you tell me your car is still "running and driving," it suggests your mechanic is full of $hit.

As to the balance shaft seals being "loose," again, what does he base this diagnosis on? Did he say the seals were wobbling and about to fly off? If so, it reinforces my suspicions that either he's and idiot or rip-off.

Balance shaft seals don't get "loose." They wear out and leak oil. But that's about it.

You might consider going to another shop and get a second opinion before you run off and dump the car.

It's LMN Motor sports it's THE Porsche place in Virginia Beach. I'm speaking in what I remember. The center of the clutch disk broke and its running on the emergency "Tangs" or something. and the balance shafts are loose and spewing oil he moved them around while I was looking at it up on the lift.

Yep his rubbber coentred clutch plate is disintegrating. Whilst in there replace all clutch parts plus pilot bearing & rear main seal and have flywheel cleaned up. Front end oil seals would suggest a complete front end belts rollers and waterpump replacement too. Big bill in a garage for parts and labour. DIY still a big parts bill but at least you would know that the car was then sound in two of the known problem areas whereas when you buy another car you won't necessarily know whats been done.

Crooks.. Are you a newby to 944's? (not to be insulting or judgmental..OK?)
You might want to listen to Petrolhead's advice. Its sound.. Also, It will not cost you more than getting another car,. If anything it will be less, particularly if you do your own work..

Been reading your recent replies to a few posts ,no need to be caustic, have found this 944 forum is a friendly community, take this how you want, but the newbe comment wears me out, without them these forums would be a little uninteresting, and besides everyone has to start somewhere

To the OP,you read the answers and make your own judgement, cheers

Porschetub.. Intent was not to be insulting. Intent was to understand backround.. Don't read anything into it..Did you see the bracketed comment?
I can be a bit sarcastic at times but I will go out of my way not to insult anyone.. NOT my style..However, my pet peave is unscrupulous mechanics who take advantage of the unsuspecting. To my knowledge we have none of those in this forum.. : ) I am just a likeable, "helping hand" type of person..

Hi Crooks, I'm a relative newbie to 944s but not to Porsches. Here are a few thoughts. First, I tried to look at your car's photos but photobucket said there were none. No one here can give you a fair idea of what your car is worth without at least a few pictures. By way of example, I just bought a 85.1 944 with uncertain mileage (stupid 5-digit odometer!), cosmetically rough, really rough interior but mechanically very sound. I paid $1100. Just the parts to do a proper clutch job would exceed that amount (if I replaced everything while I was in there, which I would).

There are a number of pretty clean 944s on craigslist in my area for between $3-5000.

As others have said, a clutch isn't necessarily a reason to part out an otherwise sound car, but if you're not mechanically equipped/able to DIY, it's going to cost a lot. If you don't know, the transaxle and torque tube have to come out, so relatively speaking it's a lot of labor. That said, I would think selling the car to someone who is willing and able to replace the clutch would be better than trying to part it out, unless it's in poor condition (I think my car is worth more in parts than as a whole car at the moment, but I was looking for a cheap project, not a DD).
It would really help others help you if you could post some pics. If you have a sound 944 in otherwise good condition, I'd hate to see it die just because of a clutch.
Good luck!
