B&B Exhaust
Anyone purchased and installed the B&B Exhaust, that Pelican sells on this website, on a NA 944? It looks great but how does it sound. I want to avoid a 'fart can' sound.

i can't attest to the 944 application, but on the 968, it isn't "fart can", but it is loud, droney, resonant, and loses low end torque (though it does gain 2-3hp way up top). i want to hear the exhaust when i stand on it, but i don't want it in my face all the time, and that's what you get. some guys like that though. i also did not like the loss of low end torque. i've known quite a few people that had to get them fixed due to cracked welds too. maybe they have gotten better at it since then?

Flash968,
Thanks much. I have read other posts on Rennlist saying similar things about welds not holding up, packing problems over time, low end torque, etc. I like the low end torque on the NA 944 also - not a Camaro or anything, but it is nice. Frankly, I'm thinking of keeping my pipes - all good - and replacing only the Cherrybomb Turbo muffler that is on it now. The one sound that I like is a Flowmaster 40 series from a Driving While Awesome DWA YouTube video. I might ask about the Flowmaster 40 series Delta Flow as they say it is less droney. If I could find a good original stock, I'd buy it but have not located one yet. JBC |

take a look at the super 50, and see if there is a size for the 944. it is designed for an SUV, which makes it a bit quieter than the 40, and i have found it to be a good match to the 968, though a hushpower 2 resonator was still required to knock it down a bit.
as with any system though, the key to it working well will be in using mandrel bends, and not standard press bends. Last edited by flash968; 09-19-2016 at 07:39 AM.. |

Constant area in bend - got it. So, you recommend a resonator even with the CAT? I did notice that there is nothing between the current CAT and the Cherrybomb. So, I will talk to the local shop in town about a resonator. I want good sound but I don't want to be beat to death by a excessive noise in the cabin running the highway at 3k rpm.

that is the problem with these cars. the flat rear floor, coupled with the big bubble back window, lead to a resonance amplifier. it's like having the hollywood bowl in the back of your car. it makes it all that much more important that focus and attention is paid to what generates sound back there.
whether or not you need a resonator will be dependent on a number of factors. the 968 is a 3 liter engine with a dual resonant intake, larger exhaust pipes, and different cam overlap. that changes the scavenging effect, which changes the exhaust sound. the 2.5 944 may not need a resonator. it will be partly personal preference. on the 968, i thought it was way too loud, and the exhaust gas velocity was wrong, without a resonator. adding it smoothed out the tone, and helped in the low end. |

My experience is that the OEM 944 cat had some type of resonator chamber built in, and an "aftermarket replacement" does not.
The car isn't any louder but there is a "rasp" or "growl" around 3800rpm that there isn't with the OEM cat fitted...it's a nice sound. If you can't find an NA exhaust perhaps you can find someone's take-off 951 cat-back. You need to change the flange to fit, but it makes a good sound. The 944 doesn't need a larger exhaust pipe though, for the reason Flash mentioned. |

Thanks much for this information. I'm going to keep the stock CAT and have the shop put on a Flowmaster, 40 or 50. I will let folks know what I think after I make the change.
