Has anybody experienced broke valve springs on the 944S, this is the second time that I'd had problems with the car due to the outer spring being cracked (1st time 4 cyl intake now 2 cyl exhaust). I've known about the cam tensioner problems (experienced it first hand) but never valve springs.

Haven't seen too many of them - I can only think of 1 or 2 at most. I am assuming that your tensioner did fail at one point - when they rebuilt your head, did they replace the valve springs?
If they didn't (a lot of shops don't - at $75 per spring, it gets pricey really quick - about $1200 to replace all of them on an S) they should have at least removed them, and checked them for squareness, proper height and checked them for cracks - replacing as necessary. AFJuvat

all the springs where checked when the tensioner broke, all of them where ok. I only push the car on occasion, so this spring thing is really a pain since i have to take the cam out to replace it and then retime the cams-- oh well.

I broke the outer valve spring of the rear intake valve of cylinder one a couple months ago. I am in the process of fixing it. Have you replaced springs before without pulling the head off? If so, how did you keep the valve from dropping into the cylinder while the springs were off, and how did you support the valve during reassembly? It might be easier on the S than it is on the S2 because I think the head of the S2 is a little deeper. Also, don't you have to check the installed spring height and tension? You can get valve springs for less than $75.00 per spring. I payed $400.00 for a set of them from a highly noted Porsche engine parts supplier. I guess that it's possible for the springs for the S to be more expensive than the springs for the S2 but not that much more expensive.

Alldi:
I have seen guys use a compressor to pressurize the cylinder and keep the valves from falling in.... or you may be able to set the one piston at the top stroke, to ensure the valve does not fall in?

Yes you do not have to remove the head to take out the valve spring, but unfortunately now i need a new exhaust cam.
