Either way run, don't walk to a 944. A non-running 924 is not something to enjoy. You might think VW=cheap and easy WRONG!

I started with a 924 and I really enjoyed driving it. The fueal accumulator is a little tricky at times, but not impossible. I have seen these before. If I remember correctly, they made 1400 of these special edition 924s. You would think a limited edition car would be worth a lot more, but they aren't. I have seen them priced between $5000 and $800. To me, if you like the car and can do the work yourself, you can't go wrong with a $1300 car. At worse, you can replace the entire engine for $4-500. Parts are just as easy to get as 944 parts. I still have an engine for my first one in my shed. Good luck with it!

The general rule when buying porsches is buy the nicest one you can afford. If you want a project, a running and driving one will keep you busy.

Cheap tires $300
Brake hoses $50
Wheel cylinders $50
Fuel pump $150
Rebuilt WUR $150
Cam belt kit $50
Intake boots (they will leak) $100
Oil change $30
Coolant flush $30
Fuel filter $20
Air filter $10
Ignition stuff $100

That's almost $1000 in stuff that you will need at a minimum. Once you're $2300+ into the car you have a car that is no longer supported by OEMs and Porsche is just chucking their stocks of 924 parts. A 4-speed car with about 80 flywheel HP in Denver. A car that will violently shake at idle and there's nothing you can do about it. Don't even think about AC for those hot days your car has been basking in the high plains sun.

Keep your eyes out for a running and driving one if you really want to get into a 924. They were only partly galvanized through 79. You should be able to get into a pretty nice driving 80-82 for under 2k. Half the 924's you see for sale "need a fuel pump". Usually they need a lot more than a fuel pump.

Here's a pretty good example (no affiliation) of the kind of 924 you want to buy if you're looking for a project

The front spoiler on that car is gone, and it looks like it has some "accessory wiring" going on in the engine bay. I'm not sure I'd be messing with that one either. The championship edition and the sebring editions are the only base 924's that might ever have any kind of collectible status. That championship edition above could be fixed. It's just going to take someone with brass balls and a big tool box to fix it. Still, I would mess with the Champ edition before any other worthless 924.

Having owned a few 924s, I agree with Jrboulder for the most part. That said, if that Martini was anywhere near me I'd be trying to get it into my shop - for about $500. But i have two 924 parts car to pull bits off. Have you driven a well sorted 924? They're sweet (in the true sense of the word) and charming. But don't buy unless you're prepared to do a lot of wrenching. And scouring the net looking for parts, many of which are NLA, as mentioned.

Still, I love the Martini model. And we love Mand's (my wife) 924...

Sorry to say it but every bit of plastic and rubber on that car is brittle and/or already broken. Having owned older 924/944/968 cars for 20 years, I wouldn't go near something like that again if my life depended on it.

In the UK genuine Martini cars are worth considerable more than regular 924. I obtained used fuel injection parts cheaply from eBay for a friends 924 that would run but was reluctant to start.
