do you have to use premium gas with a chip, or can you run regular?

Depends on what kind of engine you have and how far you push it. For instance, if you have a turbo engine and pop up the pressure to let's say 1 bar (instead of .6) you are forcing so much air into the cylinders that a high octane rate is VERY useful (if not neccesary). You might end up with tremendous problems if, under pressure, a mix would explode to fast.
I'm not sure what kind of octane you call premium? Here it's 98, 95 is normal. I run a chipped 951 (still pretty conservative) and use the 95.

If you want to be sure, ask the one who sold you the chip

Every chip I've seen that is commercially available (at this point, I know someone is going to pop up with 5 chips that don't but anyways...) requires the use of premium.

Arnebret, in the US, regular is 87, midgrade is 89, and premium is 93. (RON+MON/2)

Ah ok, i don't really know if the exact same calculation goes here as well. I can't imagine that 95 is standard here and you call premium 93, must be a different calculation. Though, i'm pretty sure all those chip makers are telling their users to use premium as this will decrease the chanche of knock etc. This way they won't be ending up with several blows from their consumers. Though, it's wise to increase fuel flow on a extremly chipped car, the chip i use is pretty conservative on extra air and should be good on 95. Though, the maker of my chip advised to use either high octane or a high fpr (or both) to be extra sure.

If you don't know how your chipped is mapped, go for premium as this might be needed under extreme conditions (high boost).
