Belt

How do I change the belt that runs the alternator on a 1979 Porsche 924?

i have a 944, so i dont exactly know what problems you are having. you need to at least release the tension on the belt before taking it off.

look for a tensioner.

As I recall from my '78 924, you first remove the under belly pan, then you loosen the tensioner bolt on the alternator, then you swing in the alternator and take off the old belt.

When you put on the new belt, you use a flat bar to safely push out on the alternator to tension the belt then re-tighten that tensioner bolt. You should be able to push on the belt and deflect it about 1/4".

I can't get the new belt on. Everything is loose and the old one slid right off but I cant slide the new one on and its the same sized belt. Is there a trick to putting this on?

Belts stretch, so the old one is assuredly longer than a new one, at least if it's been on there a while.

If the belt is the proper size, is the alternator swinging all the way "in" on that slider bracket?

belt

I've had mine off so much lately it's almost second nature. this is for my 82" but think they are same.
Make sure the alternator is loose and as far right as it'll go.
Put the belt around the Crank pully first then the Alternator pully, (so it's basically hooked around the bottom pullys), you should then be able to pull the belt up and over the top of the Waterpump pully. When you pull up it'll actually force the alternator further right as you pull up on it.
If this still does not work - check your belt size - 35" right?
Mine broke - tried a 34" which was a no-go.

What is the length of the belt, both on the package and by measuring the belt itself?

Can you get it on *past* the pulley, then use a lever to push out on the alternator, lock it in place, and let it sit a while to stretch it out?

Now that I read it I think its 34'. So I'm guessing I need a 35' belt? I appreciate all the feedback guys.

I'll have to leave that to someone with more recent 924 experience, as I don't see the length of the belt in the Service Manual or the Parts Manual.

Good luck, and make sure you ask for a x" (inch), not a x' (foot).
