HELP!!! does anybody have a 87 944S head for sale. My exhaust cam just went south and took out my head, Also what does a used head usually go for( bare or fully assembled) This is time critical since my wife doesn't know about it yet.

Unfortunately, the S heads are very expensive. I've seen used heads (assembled) go for anywhere from 1000 and up. Will do some looking for a used one for you..

One thing you can try stressing to her is that a non running 944 is worth about $500 tops - maybe you could get a little more by parting it out, but not even close to what you paid for it. So you are faced with fixing it or letting it go and cutting your losses

Let me be more clear i am definetly fixing the car, but may have to sell it afterwards since it costs WAY to much to fix (wifes words) lets face it in one years time the cam tensioner broke and now this. I love this car and rather not sell it, so I'll hope for the best in a used head.

When talking with the "better 2/3rds" one has to stress that these cars are a steal because of their rarity! Yes it seems a bit expensive to repair but then she hasn't priced out a head replacement on the car that she currently drives either.
Production figures for the 1987 944S Total Mfg: 5862 Total delivered to the US: 3127

Damn - I was just about to reply to this and let you in on a tip I had......but right in the middle of typing I thought, "I'd better call and see if they still have that head..."
I just called this place I knew had an S engine that ran out of oil (nice, eh?). He sold it last week. He sold the entire "junk" engine for like $400 (Canadian) to an American fello. He only knew there was a really bad piston and it blew out the block...he didn't know if the head was good or not - said it wasn't worth their while to break the whole thing down. Man - I wish I knew he was selling the whole thing....at that price, I would take the risk on the head still being good.....could have been a nice profit engine..... I know there is one at Part Heaven for $1500 American, with no cams included. 944S Boyeee |

Solution; Go to junk yard or look through the ads on this board and buy running 944 engine with computer.
Change the timing belts, rollers, water pump, cam box and oil pan gasket and install into non-running 944S...voila! one running 944.

Your the fourth person to have head problems this month (including myself). I deal in used porsche parts and couldn't find a good used head for less than $850, so I decided to rebuild mine. Wasn't cheap, but should work once I am finished (should have it ready by the end of next week). I am adding a few mods and blast/powdering the important parts to make it perfect. Is it just the exhaust cam that is damaged?

well i found a head (bare) for $700 and a exhaust cam, so while everything is apart i'm changing the water pump all the belts and rollers plus all the front seals. So hopefully the motoe will be trouble free for many miles to come.
