fan speed switch removal??need help

I have a 1984 944n/a and never had any problems with the fan speed switch before until today. It was on full speed(third position) for a while and when I went to turn the fan down, the switch was stuck. It will not turn to the first or second speed selections anymore. you cannot move the switch at all. I pulled the console face off but I cannot remove the unit from the console...anyone have any ideas about what to do

thanks in advance

Move all of the sliders to the center and pull off the knobs.

Pull the round knob out of the blower speed control switch.

Remove the two phillip screws that are holding the lower bezel in place. These are at the bottom of the bezel just above the radio. A short shank with a small diameter handle works best.

There is a light on the right side that has a collar to retain it. Don't loose the collar.

You can see the switch on the left.

To remove the switch from the mounting flange you need to pry in the metal retention tab on the right of the switch body with a small screw driver and coax the switch toward you. I use a phillips screw driver the same size as the hole in the center to help the switch out. Better than breaking the shaft on the knob.

Pull the switch through the square hole to get at the plug on the back of it.

Remove it from the plug and see if any part number is legible.

Shop for best price on switch.

Install is the reverse.

The reason your switch melted is your blower motor is probably dragging -- bad bearings or bushings. I've had one drag so much the speed control resistor melted a hole in the plastic housing.

As much as I think the dash on the later model 944's is a bit too much it does have great air handling.
