Based on appearance alone (what socket did it come out of anyways?) it looks like the generic "53" relay that handles a lot of mundane tasks (blower fan, turn signals etc)

Yep, I think AFJuvat has it nailed. Looks exactly like the "53" that I have a couple of spares for. In my '87 944 it goes in position #10 and a few others that I can't remember right now. This is one of the cheaper relays to replace.
