Need tips for reaming valve guides
Anyone done this? Shop guy says #3 exhaust is too tight - after he broke that valve spring on install and quizzed all the valves.
Specs should be: rock .8mm at 10mm lift, guide bore 9 to 9.015mm Is this right? And can we have at it with a reamer? Also, what's oil clearance supposed to be? Any help much appreciated. I have the parts to put the motor back together and this is the last hurdle. |

You can get carbon deposits in the guide leading to stuck valves and stuff but at the same time having the guide worn beyond spec. It happens all the time to small Lycoming engines. Ream it and see what happens...

Stand by to ream!
Don't know origin of guides/valves. First time head came off this car, and all it needed was a refresh, not serious work. So valves have been run in, things tidied up...you know? He's really happy with it. 'It's almost perfect! Just that !#%#ing exhaust valve!' he says. |

Isn't it always "just one thing"?

So true! But this time.....
I have all the parts. I have a plan. I have the right tools (mostly). Reassembly begins this weekend. Of course, my DD needs attention before the snow flies. Thanks for the replies, gents. The valve job is now comfortably within the realm of the familiar. Wish us luck! John, I'll be photographing the flex disc to clutch conversion and a write-up will be forthcoming. |
