Dashboard lights

Haven't driven my car at night for a while until the other day and noticed that the heater controls on the centre console weren't illuminated when the headlights were switched on. Is this normal?

Everything else seems to illuminate okay (speedo, rev counter, battery, oil pressure etc.)

My dash is the square dash version 1984.

No, they should light up when you cut on the headlights on there is a small bulb that goes to it and its easy to replace once you get the face plate off.
