944 died....then starts (??)
Today, while driving around my neighborhood with my kids (well, 2 of the 6, anyway).....and being about a half mile from my house, my car just stopped running. Car turned over easily, but wouldn't start. After coming to a stop, I saw that two of my older boys (13 and 15) were not a stones throw away at one of their friends house playing football, so I had them push me home; with my 9 yr old behind the wheel
![]() Got it home in about 5-8 minutes.....popped the hood, took a look and made sure coil wire and plug wires were snug...Got in the car and she fires right up... ![]() ![]() About 20 minutes later took it to wal mart to get stuff for dinner (2 miles), no problems.....drove him w/o incident. What can be looked at to see why it would do this? I'd appreciate any and all answers. Btw, the car runs pretty good, except that the rear shocks appear to be shot and do not slow on compression over rough road. The fronts are good and stiff..so I'll need to get rear shocks soon. I'll take a pic of it this week real soon and post it, but I want to know what to look at for the sudden unexplained dying.

Yep, todwic called it, sounds like your DME relay is shot.
You can check it really quick, remove the relay and remove the plastic cover (it pops on and off) - if you got that fried electrical smell, you've found the culprit. AFJuvat

DME relay, eh? For fear of sounding ignorant, where is this relay located so that I can check it? My mechanic has the clymers on it, but if it is simple, I can check it tonight. what does it say on the relay? I have about 6-7 relays (or what appears to look like relays), so I might have one available...
Just the smell will give it away? I work with computers and often times I can smell when a component fries......is it the same?

On your relay board, top row, second from left. Yes, it gives off that "cooked electronics smell"

Cool. Once I find the 'relay board', I will take a look at it.
Thanks for the tip; I'll report my findings..

between the two rows of fuses, look in your owners manual.
they look like a row of 1"X1" plastic boxes with Alien writting on them ![]()

I vote for DME relay too but if you wanna trouble shoot it you can always read the electrical diagram on the relay and jump it with a paper clip to test.
enjoy! |

I would look in the owner's manual...if I had one! I took a peak at the Clymers manual and there is NO reference to relays at all!
![]() I guess enough here have gotten me pointed in the right direction. I will look tonight and see what I smell, uh, er I mean find. One question...if the DME relay doesn't smell burnt, then what??

I'm still inclined ot think DME relay, even if it doesn't stink.
I think I'm close to the record for longevity of a DME relay - the one I replaced last week was 12 years old (they have a date stamped on them) AFJuvat

Really Todwic....
![]() Well, I looked under and I see a board that has space for like 6 relays. The first space doesn't have anything (no relay), space 2nd and 3rd have white relays w/a fuse in the front, then 4th and 5th are black, and then in the 6th space is nothing.....I'm reading them left to right.....from sitting in the drivers seat. Is it the first white one w/ a fuse? I'm sure if I had an woner's manual, I'd know what to look at.....guess I need to find one and buy it.

I was searching the site here for various info on my car (there are lots) and I came across this diagram on the fuses and relays for the 944...
You guys have been a great help, so I thought I'd post the link to that diagram. http://www.pelicanparts.com/944/944QA/944_early_fuse_panel.htm I hadn't had a chance to bend my neck checking this, but at least I know where to look now Thanks.... ![]()
