DME relay rewiring

I got my Porsche 944 a few months ago. Actually, I was appalled at the idea of owning a foreign car until I worked on my buddy's 944 and fell in love with it. The handling is out of this world, the gas mileage isn't too bad either and not to mention the seemingly hidden community that's addicted to these cars. I figured I'd be alone in my Porsche 944 ownership with no guide.

Aside from the slight introduction, I have a question about DME relay wiring. Mine hasn't went out yet, but I'm fearful of the day. From the wiring diagrams I can see that it's two relays in one. My question is, what's stopping me from dissecting this wiring and putting in two normal relays that aren't expensive in it's place?

Also, I've been considering a MegaSquirt conversion to get rid of the 30 year old computer. Opinions?

There's nothing to stop you except time and money, plus fitting two relays into the place of one might physically be difficult.

The experienced 944 driver carries a spare DME relay (they cost around $30) or a jumper made with two wires and three crimp-on spade connectors. Both suit the purpose.

One thing I can't seem to find, do you happen to know the amount of amperage needed for those two circuits?

Fuel Pump / DME Relay

No need to do what you're trying to do.

The fuel pump is fused (#34) at 15 amps. The DME is unfused, but 10 amps should cover it.

Well, from what I've heard the DME relay is a part that fails quickly? I was just wondering what's the difference between a DME relay and a SPDT relay? I've been working on cars for 10 years, 4 of them being professional and it's been a good while since I've actually faulted a relay for a problem.

By the way, thanks for the information so far. I'm considering just using one regular single pole double throw relay instead of two SPST.

It's not that it fails quickly, it's just when it does fail, you're not going anywhere.

Right, right. So these relays don't exactly fail quicker than 'modern' relays? I suppose I've been fed misinformation. Thank you for straightening it out.

If you are going to prototype a new DME relay replacement why not use solid-state relays and get away from any moving parts or contacts?

Seems a logical move forward to modern components rather than still using the same old DME relay technology.

Quite right, sir. It never crossed my mind, for some reason. I've actually been looking in to some solid state relays and the like to broaden my knowledge of circuitry. I'll definitely pick a couple of SSRs up and report back with my findings.

I just ordered two of these guys
1 Clion Solid State Relay SSR DC DC 25A 5 32VDC to 12 250VDC $2 SHIP All Qty | eBay

Gonna try to use the actual body of the car as the heat sink for them. I'll return with pictures and diagrams once they arrive.
