I have a 1987 944S with 208K miles and will need a transmission rebuild soon. Syncros are slowly going. Is there anyone on the east coast renound for rebuilding this transmission? I would rather have mine rebuilt than to accept a rebuild and use mine as the core.

I would shop around at some local tranny-places. The shop I PT in does rebuild them, but just to warn you beforehand, it is rather expensive - somewhere in the neighborhood of $2000 depending on what parts you need.
You would almost be better off buying a used one and rebuilding the one you have yourself at your leisure. AFJuvat

I would love to rebuild the Transmission as I have a spare I bought some time ago, but, I understand special tools and a press is needed to press gears on and off and a special jig to properly align the gears. Ever rebuild one yourself?

Any place that does transaxles for 80s audi's, or vws' should be able to rebuild your transaxle without a problem.
If you don't have to stay with the east coast, german transaxle of oregon does descent work. Ahmet

Dude, you grinding gears alot? I mean as long as you took care of your tranny and not pushing a BUTT LOAD of HP, then your tranny should still be ok, unless you think otherwise. I mean I don't the history of the car. Just replace all your synchros.

No gears grinding at all. I have taken pretty good care of the car since I got it in 1987. Just getting a little more resistance going into gear. Especially downshifting. Can't shift as fast as I use to. Are the syncros a do it yourself deal for the backyard mechanic? I have another tranny I can "experiment" on. Thanks for your input

Yeah, you can do it, just take your time. You are the original owner? Thats cool. You have trouble downshifting? Is it like notchy or like rugged going into the gears? Is so then your synchros are on thiere way out. I mean if you never changed them, then you should, it wouldnt hurt. You say its harder to downshift then it is to upshift?

It's just notchy but still goes into gear pretty well. I am afraid to shift toofast because I may miss the shift due to the notchy way it goes into gear. Downshifting and upshifting are about the same as far as being notchy. Do you know if special tools are required? I have the factory manuals for the car and it just looks like they use some pretty special tools. I guess I could get the gear clusters out and take them to a tranny shop if it comes to that. I am lucky cause I have a spare to rebuild so I can take my time. Thanks for tour post
