Well, looks like the guy had some fun on the track with his Ferrari, but he doesn't have proper technique. For example:
1. Shuffling of hands in turns. Hands should stay at 9 & 3. On a couple of tighter turns, he moves he hands to 8 & 2: there was really no need for him doing that.

2. Jerking the wheel in corners: his initial turn in was worse than my turn ins on the track! Not smooth at all! And he was sawing the wheel back and forth. (Sometimes this technque is used to settle the car, but not the way he was driving!)

All in all, it's a fun video to watch.

I'd like to go after him in my 951.

The sawing business is not what he ought to be doing. I don't know why people do it other than they see it on TV in stock car racing.

the redline on that f355 (introduced in 95!) is about 8250 rpm(but some will go to 8800).........you have to keep the rpms high......

Those ferrari's just scccccccccccrrrrrrrreaaammmmm in your ear.... its a beautifull thing....

I don't know any stock 951's that would even keep close to this thing.......... maybe the 968 turbo s

the stock 355 does 0-60 in about 4.5 seconds... 180 mph top end...... high 12 quarter miles (~13 seconds)...

Z-man : one of the reasons his hands shift around, is that the 355 has the F1 transmission.... levers on the steering column.... no stick shift......... the right one selects a higher gear... and the left a lower..... his car was made to be driven like an F1... not a 5 speed stick shift, thats why you probably notice such a different racing style

He was driving the 355? He said 140 full throttle? He was passed by a f50 doing about 160.

Good friend of mine has a 355, a yellow one. Unfortunately, he hit the wall after turn 5 at Road Atlanta this past June. He left his mark there, a yellow splat on the wall.

A modified 951 will keep up with a 355 in straight line acceleration. The previous owner of the 355 had it at Roebling three years ago, and we were even on the long straight there. That was before I upped the power on mine a little more.

He should have car ready by November PCA event. The damage was sheet metal and a little suspension. I'll see how we compare then. I'm going to be disappointed if mine does not have a little more straight line speed. We shall see.

My friend runs huge Hoosier's and club races his 951. He is a little faster than I and pushes cars a lot harder than I do so he is faster on the twisties. But at the upcoming November DE, two other friends with modified 951's will be there and each is very familiar with Road Atlanta and each pushes their car. Plus, there will be a bunch of other 951 club racers there. It should be interesting. It is highly driver dependent.

A friend of mine had the 355..... they handle incredibly well..........

Its that engine noise thats just makes you want to plant the gas.

A modded 951 should be able to keep up..... not bad for a car thats at least 10 years older than the ferrari.

Its difficult to compare ferrari's and porsches..... they are totally different animals.

Yup, modified 951's are incredible. Another friend of mine has a 951 with a 2.7 engine in it. He said it was putting out about 425 at the rear wheels. It was putting out a heck of a lot because mine is not slow and he blew by me.

Unfortunately, he also claimed his spot on the wall before turn 5 at Road Atlanta. Major damage. This occurred in April and car has not been out yet. I suspect it'll come back to the track even faster.

He was running over 17 psi boost and witches brew (racing fuel) in it when he did the dyno run, he said.

One thing I noticed about it was the exhaust at idle. Mine just sort of putt putts, kind of barely pushes your hand when you put it in right in front of the exhaust outlet. His was different. I could really feel it pushing at my hand with each pulse. The engine sounded different from mine. It had a deeper tone. Made mine sound like a wind up toy.

So he's shifting in the middle of a turn? Doesn't make much sense. Or I guess he's moving his hands to get ready to shift, while still going through a turn, which again, doesn't make sense: he should be focusing on taking the turn, then straightening the car, and then shifting....

Just my $0.42.

The F-1 shift paddles (or levers) on that car do NOT rotate with the steering wheel, which sucks, since it's Ferarri and the F1 car's paddles DO rotate with the wheel. The driver probably likes to keep his hands near those shifters, just in case he needs to downshift suddenly, or upshift coming out of a turn...

The BMW SMGII F1 tranny on the '03 M3 will be much better, with much more flexibility.
