Problem adjusting Short shifter
I recently put in an only944 shifter. It works GREAT, necessary upgrade IMO. All gears engage fine and its still drivable.
For adjusting the forward/backward position of the lever, you loosen the 2 13mm bolts to slide the base BACKWARDS to make the shifter stand more upright. Here is my problem. The base is at the limit of the slotted holes and and I can't get the positioning right. Adjust the linkage on the transmission...?

Pic of the shifter under the boot, and pics of the short shifter on the trans? (Clean looking interior btw).

what isn't right about the position? it is not supposed to be vertical. it is supposed to be tipped back 5 degrees (see the pic below from the workshop manual). it looks like it is.
does it not work? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403036060.jpg |

Hmm..
When you reinstalled the short shifter into the long shift rod, did you double check that the tapered bolt was back in its hole on the rod? There could be some fore/aft play there. Also in the smaller tapered bolt that goes from the short shifter pivot to the shifter rod that goes into the transmission. And did you safety wire those two bolts into place? |
ah - i thought the first was unadjusted, and the second adjusted, but both in neutral

Well, there are two set screw type bolts with conical ends that also have holes in their hex ends for safety wire.
The conical ends in both instances have to be located into shallow holes drilled into the connecting shafts, one shaft going into the transmission itself and the other being the five to six foot long rod that connects to the shift lever in the cabin. If those locating bolts aren't tightened into their locating holes, they will still hold the shifter to their rods but the lengths of the arms will be incorrect and so the shifter will be off. |

Here's a photo just to make things clearer.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403039783.jpg See the indent in the end of the short shifter rod that's pointing to the left? That's where the set screw has to go into. The other set screw/bolt that's holding the bottom arm of the short shifter to the transmission )in the center of the picture) also has a locating hole. It's only the bolt at the top of the short shifter assembly that adjusts for left/right. Notice that mine is going into the only944 shifter lever, which I also installed. HTH Cheers Chris |

Let us know if that was the cause. Cheers Chris |
Yes Yes... I understood from your post, and the pic makes it obvious what you're talking about. Thanks. I guess I will just have to investigate. Thank you.
|
And so conversely, if you have to adjust it out of its spot and maybe drill another shallow hole to make your shifter arm effectively an inch or so longer...so be it!

I'm fairly certain that that's your cause, especially if you didn't fit a new gear shifter in the front.
|
Can you just post some picture so we can see......both of the shifter under the boot, and the SS at the trans....

On my 951, I fitted the only944 rear parts with a stock shifter and a short shifter. Adjustment was fin in both cases.
I suspect one of the bolts in the rear is the issue and it can be tricky to get it all lined up in the confined space provided. Good luck! |
