Problem adjusting Short shifter

I recently put in an only944 shifter. It works GREAT, necessary upgrade IMO. All gears engage fine and its still drivable.

For adjusting the forward/backward position of the lever, you loosen the 2 13mm bolts to slide the base BACKWARDS to make the shifter stand more upright.

Here is my problem. The base is at the limit of the slotted holes and and I can't get the positioning right.

Any thoughts?

Adjust the linkage on the transmission...?

I thought it was installed correctly, but I will have to take another look. From what I understand, you adjust the left/right movement on the trans axle, and the forward/back movement on the shifter plate.

Pic of the shifter under the boot, and pics of the short shifter on the trans? (Clean looking interior btw).

what isn't right about the position? it is not supposed to be vertical. it is supposed to be tipped back 5 degrees (see the pic below from the workshop manual). it looks like it is.

does it not work?

its not at 85*. It is way further back. The first picture of it is in neutral, and the second picture is it in 1st. I need to move the base plate back to move the shifter forward, but there is no more adjustment that way.

Hmm..

When you reinstalled the short shifter into the long shift rod, did you double check that the tapered bolt was back in its hole on the rod?

There could be some fore/aft play there.

Also in the smaller tapered bolt that goes from the short shifter pivot to the shifter rod that goes into the transmission.

And did you safety wire those two bolts into place?

flash968 06-17-2014 12:56 PM

ah - i thought the first was unadjusted, and the second adjusted, but both in neutral

Well, there are two set screw type bolts with conical ends that also have holes in their hex ends for safety wire.
The conical ends in both instances have to be located into shallow holes drilled into the connecting shafts, one shaft going into the transmission itself and the other being the five to six foot long rod that connects to the shift lever in the cabin.
If those locating bolts aren't tightened into their locating holes, they will still hold the shifter to their rods but the lengths of the arms will be incorrect and so the shifter will be off.

I get what youre saying. the set screw is holding the shift rod in the wrong position, effectively making it shorter... which would explain why mine sits far back. that is something I will have to look into when I have time get the car up. Thanks. I am open to other theories as well! anyone else?

Here's a photo just to make things clearer.

See the indent in the end of the short shifter rod that's pointing to the left? That's where the set screw has to go into.

The other set screw/bolt that's holding the bottom arm of the short shifter to the transmission )in the center of the picture) also has a locating hole.

It's only the bolt at the top of the short shifter assembly that adjusts for left/right.

Notice that mine is going into the only944 shifter lever, which I also installed.

HTH
Cheers
Chris

Exactly. That's my 2cents, anyway!

Let us know if that was the cause.

Cheers
Chris

Yes Yes... I understood from your post, and the pic makes it obvious what you're talking about. Thanks. I guess I will just have to investigate. Thank you.

ChrisRL 06-17-2014 01:23 PM

And so conversely, if you have to adjust it out of its spot and maybe drill another shallow hole to make your shifter arm effectively an inch or so longer...so be it!

But why?!?! why would my car be different?! arent they all created equal. Yeah you're right, that's what Ill do if its too short.

ChrisRL 06-17-2014 01:50 PM

I'm fairly certain that that's your cause, especially if you didn't fit a new gear shifter in the front.

CHICKS 06-17-2014 01:57 PM

Can you just post some picture so we can see......both of the shifter under the boot, and the SS at the trans....

Yeah I will. The shifter under the boot looks fine. nothing weird, nothing modified but I will post pics anyways. Also, If that set screw is the problem then no need! It will probably be a few days until I get to it.

Lets us know.

On my 951, I fitted the only944 rear parts with a stock shifter and a short shifter. Adjustment was fin in both cases.

I suspect one of the bolts in the rear is the issue and it can be tricky to get it all lined up in the confined space provided.

Good luck!
