want to fix power steering return cooler line for last time
Want to fix my power steering cooler-to-reservoir hose for the last time, and not worry about it again.
Power steering cooler tube (the moonshiner maze) is 10 mm OD , mild steel. Power steering reservoir inlet is 12 mm od. Mismatch. Naturally. Originally there was a hose crimped to outlet end of cooler tube to run up to reservoir; original hose long gone but per PET looks like one of those specials; soft hose 10mm ID one end, flared to 12mm ID other side. But wait ! Theres More ! The hose is not offered as a separate item, only available with the cooler, for $$$. Thank you Porsche for making life complicated for us loyal but Poorsche owners. I previously had a 10mm line crimped onto cooler line, intending to try to force the other end onto the 12mm reservior stub, but with only high pressure hose (stiff stuff) available, no way will it expand that much. At this point I am looking for a 10mm ID / 12mm(ish) OD "butt weld union" that will let me braze to cooler tube, still terminating in a compression (crimped ferrule fitting) flared tip. The idea not unlike this wrong-size item ; Have not found anything yet . I nearly sure there is suitable dimension plain steel tube out there; 10mm ID , 12mm OD. This would make a very simple transition to 12mm hose, but tube would lack any shoulder to secure the crimped hose. I dont even know the name of the slight 'flare' end that accommodates a crimp on fitting - anyone ? its not quite a flare, I ahve no way of forming that shape in steel. Will be sadly scrounging the generic brake line bin at O'Rs, then probably to the hydraulic shop in town come Monday, meanwhile posing a few ideas & questions for the brilliant pelican flock here; 1) hate to solve old problems; is there a better fix already out there? has any one found a 10mm to 12mm hydraulic line (useable length , suitable for low pressure hot oil) that I can simply have crimped onto cooler tube? searchable particulars please …. attaboy richly deserved will come back your way. barring that golden solution; 2) any one have a part name, number etc, for the braze-on fitting (10mm ID , 12mm OD, some kind of swage or mild flare on the end that allows for a secure & oil tight crimp hose fitting on the 12mm end ? ) pics shows the starting point of tube; I already slit the crimped ferrule, and I intend to cut off the one end of steel tube and repair with the yet-to-be-discovered fitting. Other criteria; cheap, secure, leak tight and quickly available. thanks in advance, will post a how to do guide after putting this to rest. Now now quit smirking; when I got my car, the fuel lines, underframe, were pretty well crushed by DP parking the car atop a rock; I removed those loooong gas lines under car, cut out the offending sections, and brazed on some mild steel tube to replace the section. Worked great and no complaints since. (was a propane + ox braze ... nothing more. Happy to try MAPP this time) |
