Removing trans axle....

1986 944 porsche

alright so I had my brother come over to try and remove the transaxle we undid the one allen head through the big hole but didn't notice the second allen head in the small hole we were able to get the transaxle away from the housing but it is stuck now because we didn't see the allen head we missed now it has to go back together but for the life of us we cant get the transaxle sucked back up in its original state. I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and a solution. I think we may of pryed it between the case is why it wont go back together but I am at a lost of words about ready to break out the cutting torch.

I'm not clear on which bolts you are referring to. Are you talking about the TT spline bolts or the tranny mount bolts?

If you were you able to get the TT spine completely separated from the tranny, you can just remove the 10M bolts from the tranny crossmember to frame and lower the whole thing.

If you are having other issues, please try to be more clear. Pics or diagram copies go a long way in visualizing the problem.

That coupler is the most annoying thing ever when it's stuck or seized, I needed to use a grinder to cut mine in half after one of the allen bolts seized and stripped. If I were you, I would do everything possible to push the trans either back in to where you can remove the bolt, or pull it clean off.

That coupler is hardened steel, I attacked it with bimetal sawzall blades and cobalt drill bits... little to no progress, grinder with a cutoff wheel cut it no problem though.

If we are indeed talking about the coupler, can you get to the other bolt at all to loosen? It's possible that the tranny has dropped out of position enough to not allow it to slide forward. you may try having someone lift or jiggle it as you try to slide it back into the spline.

Stupid question, but I trust you removed the coupler bolt completely, not just loosened?

Yikes. My guess is that you've also pulled the drive shaft rearwards. I agree that you should do whatever you can to move the tranny forward again and try to get that coupler moved.

Ender = entire? I was thinking that but was hesitant to suggest it... In that event, the rear suspension comes out fairly easily. The bellhousing bolts on the engine can be a pain to get to but then the whole torque tube/tranny can be taken out as one unit. Easy to say, right?

Easier to get to the 4 bolts holding the torque tube to the bellhousing, leave the bellhousing and clutch on the engine. This way you also don't have to mess with the clutch either.

I agree, the rear suspension comes out surprisingly easy.

Those 4 bolts that hold the torque tube to the bellhousing can be removed with a long extension + u joint + socket. In fact, the extension I used (from harbor freight I think) was the perfect length to where I could torque them from inside the car, with the socket connecting to the extension through the shifter lever hole.
