I've just bought an early 85 944 and have a lot of backlash when i engage the clutch below about 2,5000 revs. Does this mean the dreaded clutch replacement or is there another classic fault which causes this. It sounds as if it's coming form the back of the car, thought it might be the diff. I haven't had time to start my own fault diagnosis was just wondering if anyone could shed any light on the matter despite the little information given.
Thanks Jake |

I have a similar problem, but I've gotten so used to it that I no longer worry that a clutch job is near... though it probably is.
Try to develop a method letting the clutch up a bit slower over the last period. The rubber OEM clutches do bounce a bit.

Sadly and unfortunately, your clutch is on the way out - though in truth, it can go like this for a few months before it dies.
Plan/budget accordingly AFJuvat

I had the same problem and I had to replace the clutch. When I got the old clutch disc out and had a look at it I was surprized that my car even made it out of the yard on it. It was pretty toast.
