1985.5 944 scraping noise from rear

My son recently purchased this car and we are trying to eliminate a few little issues. I rebuilt the lower control arm ball joints this past weekend to pass inspection.

There is wind noise from the hatch. I think its due to the gasket. Easy fix I'm guessing. The other problem is the exhaust noise. It sounds like there is an exhaust leak, but I can't find anything wrong. Maybe it just needs a new muffler? It rumbles and reminds me of an old truck until you get moving at a decent clip.

The scraping sounds like its coming from the rear and it goes away with the clutch pressed. Its pretty constant when driving but can go away for a few seconds depending on the load or rpms.

Thanks

The clutch in these cars is up front in the the bell housing so if the noise is coming from the rear its not the clutch its self. it could bet the torque tube/bearing for said tube. That is the tube that transmits power from the engine aft to the transmission. Once you are in the rear it could be the trans. The only other main thing I can think of back there is the CV joints or the rotors/calipers/rear wheel bearings. All of these 3 are relatively easy to address.

I would get the car up on jack stands and take a look at the CV joints to check for ripped boots. The rebuild kits are cheap and its an easy job. Basically just remove, clean, regrease, put on fresh boot and pop back on there. Dont forget to get fresh bolts and a decent cheese head socket to remove them.

Check the rotors and pads as you would any other car.

Check for play in the rear wheel bearing (im not sure how to do this but I believe there is a method)

The torque tube is the hardest to check and the hardest to remove. I have never done it so I wont offer an explanation on how to do so but there are plenty of resources out there on doing it.

Regards
Dave

Do you hear the noise when the engine is at idle or when the car is at speed? That will help us help you determine the cause. Initially it sounds to me like a bad throwout bearing.

I hear the noise at speed until I press the clutch and then it goes away until I let the clutch out again. It is not noticeable when stationary.
