Crippler - You took the engine out from the top?

Crippler said...

IT'S OUT! I managed to get the engine out today, through the top I might add. As I mentioned I already had the trans out and today I took the rad out, unhooked AC compressor, Power streeing pump and all the wires and such. It came right out, quite nicely.
I have the tranny and torque tube pulled back as well.....

So you pulled the engine out from the top....

Quick questions?

1. Where did you attach the lift?
2. Anything else that you recall being a problem?

Thanks!

on an NA, there are 2 lift points - one at the rear of the cam housing, the other in the vicinity of the alternator.

yup those are the two mounts that I used. It is quite tight, but if you just take it slow it's not a problem. The only difficult part was the installation. The engine goes in about half way and then you have to change the angle it is going in at to clear the steering linkage. This isn't a big problem if you have someone to help you. I simply had my friend pull down on the front of the engine to tip it forward a bit. It took us a couple of trys to get it going in just right, but it wasn't a big problem. Also unless you have a cherry picker(hydralic lift) I wouldn't recomend taking it out from the top. Nothing else that I can remeber that was a problem, motor mounts were kinda hard to reach to unbolt, but other than that it was pretty easy. First engine I ever removed

I have a hydraulic lift.....

The only reason it crossed my mind......Once you pull back the torque tube and tranny it sure looks like it would be easy?

I just don't want to pull the crossmember.... not sure why I don't! But I don't!

Thanks guys.

?oh what did you guys use for an engine stand?

If you want to pull the engine from the top, the crossmember still has to come off.

There is no need to remove the trans or move the torque tube, just remove the four bolts holding the tube to the clutch housing.

Always remove the distributor cap and rotor arm and oil filter as those parts will catch and break. The radiator can stay in the car, just remove the cooling fans. Pull the DME harness out as the enging is removed. You can leave the hood on, but be extremely carefull not to damage the rear edge of the hood or break the windshield with it........ For diy, removing the hood is much safer.

I left my crosmember in, but I had to take my radiator out. that is how it worked for me. It seemed quite easy. Oh and I did remove the hood aswell.

Crippler left the crossmember in because he removed the trans and pulled the torque tube back, I assume he also removed the clutch housing too. If you want to avoid all of that you will need to remove the x-member and steering rack (which is a lot easier)

It's still easier to drop it out under the car if you have a lift.

I removed trans and torque tube but not the bellhousing and clutch assembly, that was the reason for removing the engine.

I have my tranny removed and torque tube moved back as well....

Bell housing is still on as well.....

Brit: I think I would of dropped her out as well from underneath if I hadn't pulled the tranny out last night........ It just crossed my mind to pull it from above after seeing how much space I had under there...... will let you know how it goes.

uhhmmmmmm on a side note, about how much clearance do I need if I drop the motor???? I have her on stands, and have the jacks up about 18 inches?

Thanks guys.

Ya the fact that I already had the trans out and the torque tube back made me choose to try it from the top. I also didn't think the jack stands i had would raise the car enough to clear the engine. I would go for it and try it. It really wasn't that bad, just make sure everything is unhooked, that you have enough clearence and that baby should pop right out of there. I guess I should have took pictures then I could have shown you exactly what I did, maybe next time.
