Caliper Click

Hey pelicans,

I have an 87 NA that I have been going through and fixing up. Ive gone through and repaired or replaced all of the items on the car that were not functioning correctly or needed TLC that were obvious issues, wear items or just appeared neglected and now I am sniffing out new issues to address.

If i am crusing above 35mph and I apply the brake, the passenger front caliper clicks once when the brakes begin to engage. I pulled the wheel apart and found that there is play between the brake pad on the piston side and the caliper piston. I do not believe I am missing any clips or components.

I plan on eventually restoring the entire brake system but I suppose my question is, do you suppose the caliper or the rotor is at fault?

I have recieved basically no information from the PO, but the brake pads look practically brand new to me, though the retaining pins are seized in and I will need to be ordering a hardware kit from our host.

The piston might be hanging up. A caliper rebuild kit may be in your future (or rebuilt calipers).

I may do it just to do it. The piston does engage, though, it just doesn't stay extended. Internal leak?

The caliper piston slides on the bore seal as the pad wears. Old rubber may not accomplish this effectively.

Ah, that explanation makes sense to me. I appreciate it, rebuild it is.

Make sure the caliper-pin is sliding smoothly. Use silicone-grease for that.

The smoothness of the sliding of the caliper pin on my car could be described as totally, irreparably seized. Ha! I will be ordering a hardware kit and rebuild kit soon. Thanks again.

Update.

I pulled the caliper in question, replaced the seal, dust ring and retaining clip as well as the brake pad hardware. I replaced the brake hose as well with a DOT approved stainless steel variant from Lindsey Racing WYIT style. No more clicking!

Cleaned and repainted too. Here is the result.
