Help Major Problem!!!!

Okay I was driving along today and went to shift from third two fourth and as I let the clutch out I heard just a quick little grind and a light thump. No gear. nothing. So now I can get it into 1st, 3rd and 5th, but have to hold the shifter in place or it pops out. I can't get it into 2nd, 4th, reverse. Also when in neutral the shifter just falls back on it's own between 4 and rev. Oh and the shifter movement is really awkward.

So I need some advice hear, I am really scared as to what it might be.

Your shift linkeage probably came loose? or is coming loose?

Hard to tell if its at the lever or at the transmission end....

That happened to me on an old 77 toyota corolla (what a rust bucket!)............ Hopefully thats all it is.

I was just out looking at it Ithink it is probably the linkage, not sure though. I can however get it into gear back at the trans itself. What should I look for, is it broken or just loose?

Take the cover of the stick shift and look down and take a look at the pivot and linkage to the stick if it looks fine at that point....

Take a look at the rear to see if any pieces are coming loose at the transmission.

You may need someone to move the stick around while you look at the rear...

good luck.

Just over the drivers side of the transmission where the axle comes out is the pivot for the side to side movement of the shifter. This has a tendency to come loose.

So if your shifter is really sloppy all of a sudden then the nut has most likely come loose. Takes a 17 mm socket and a 13 mm wrench on the nut to tighten it. I replaced the nut with a nylock 8mm x 1.25mm.

Best to get to it right away before you loose the two flat washers that clamp the flat linkage.

This pivot will also affect the front to back shifter movement.

There is a picture of it on page 125 of the Haynes manual. Upper left corner.

Also check out the bolt shown by the arrow in the attached picture. The picture is of area above the drivers side CV joint.

The piviot/rotational bolt is to the right of this coupling.

Note: That black thing sticking up in the lower left is the sender for the speedo. Later model 944.

Crippler 10-09-2002 07:37 PM

Okay here is what I have found, I 'll try to explain it anyways.
The shifter rod slides front to back in the coupling. It is only suposed to rotate in it, not slide. There appears to be a c-clip on it, not sure though I am going to have a better look at it tomarrow. So does anybody actually understand what I trying to describe.

SoCal Driver 10-09-2002 07:45 PM

You are talking about the shifter part in the car and not the connections at/on the transmission.

Yes?

And this is the pin that stick out of the side of the shift lever and through the small piece of tubing welded to the end of the long linkage that goes back toward the transmission.

This does wear but shouldn't cause near as much of the slop you describe.

Crippler 10-09-2002 07:57 PM

Nope I am talking about the part at the trans. It to the right of that rubber boot in the picture. So it is actually just cut out of that picture

SoCal Driver 10-09-2002 08:02 PM

Get the 17 and 13 mm wrenchs and tighten it. The shifter should be in the center after you tighten it. If not readjust and tighten it.

Crippler 10-09-2002 08:19 PM

Still not sure if I understand what you mean, but I'll keep in mind what you said tomarrow when I have a look at it. I post what I find and if what you suggested worked.

Oh I also looked in th haynes manual and the part of the linkage they showed to center the shifter was not where my problem lies. However that was to center it side to side. My problem is front to back.

Thanks

Front of car is to the left. The Part sticking up with the large hex head is the piviot bolt for the linkage rotation. This is what selects the gears: 1-2, 3-4. 5-reverse.

The arm sticking out of the transmission uses the fore-aft shifter movement to engage the gears. This arm could be loose.

Crippler 10-09-2002 08:57 PM

The rubber boot in that picture is where my problem is. That rod with the rubber boot slides front to back with out moving th shift linkage.

Here's a parts diagram:

GREAT! Thanks alot So Cal. I think I should be able to solve my problem tomarrow with the aid of that diagram.

Thanks again So Cal. I appreciate it.

Well looks like my major problem turned out to be quite small. THe lock ring (part no.22) had just poped off, it was a challange to get it back on , but no big deal.

Anyways thanks for all the advice So Cal. Good to know there is someone around to think cleary fro me when I freak out about whats wrong with my car.lol

thanks

SoCal Driver 10-10-2002 07:53 AM

The question now is why did it pop off?

Has the transmission been removed lately?

If so then did you check the other disassembly points?

Note: The pointed end bolt item 19 is the correct means of seperating the shifting linkage from the transmission.

Crippler 10-10-2002 08:31 AM

I had the tranny out this summer, however i did use bolt no.19 to seperate the shift linkage. I really have no clue to why this poped out, other than it just must have been working it's self out slowly over time.
