ok, go figure THIS one out...
i smelled the oil a while ago and it didn't smell like gas. now it does! sounds like a leaky injector has been the culprit for a while now. what's the best way to tell which one is leaking? i can clean them ultrasonically too if necessary, or is replacement the only option? what's the best way to tell which injector is leaking? light in the spark plug hole? check for wet plugs to see which smells like gas? right now i gott keep this on the cheap side because we're mooching out of the GTI racing budget to work on the 944 (that wasn't supposed to happen!) thanks! obin

Eother by pulling the injector or doing the "light in the cylinder" trick. - you may not get a wet plug.
If you can get them cleaned cheaply (around here it is about $35/injector) do it. It may or may not cure the leak. AFJuvat

i have an ultrasonic cleaner good for cleaning lab equipment, tools, jewelry... or whatever else you want to stuff into there.
should i clean the injectors ultrasonically? i know that's how some places do it. i wonder if there's a way to rpessure test or leak-test them. otherwise i think i'm going to have to replace the leaking one (hopefully not all, that'll really suck!) thanks! obin

You can always pull the injectors, attach a length of hose to it, fill it with carb cleaner and apply air pressure to it and see if it leaks.
I read somewhere on here that people were able to get their injectors to fire by using a 9V battery - you could try backflushing it to see if something is making it stick open. AFJuvat

backflushing eh? hmmmmmmm. well i'll pull them all off tomorrow and clean them out. i'll try the air pressure and carb cleaner trick to see if that does it. maybe something is making then stick. i was hoping i could find the defective one with a light. i'll try ultrasonic cleaning to see if taht loosens up something that is making one stick open. i would not rule out something clogging and injector open as this problem FIRST reared it's ugly head a long time ago when the fuel filter was first changed.
getting them to fire using a 9v battery eh? any more info on this? thanks! obin

I've never tried it - just something I read here on the BBS
I have always gotten them to fire by running two wires and one push button (normally open) switch between a battery charger and the injector. Using the push button to "pulse" the injector. pep boys has the injector seal kits inclusing the "hat" for the 85.5 and later cars - $2.49 each. AFJuvat

You should be able to lift the injector rail out of the inlet without depressurising the system. You then can power the pump to pressurise the system and see which of the injectors leak.
It is good to clean them all anyway if you can. |

ok, dumb question before i go and rip 4 fuel injectors out...
dirt in the injectors will cause them to leak, so by cleaning them i'm removing the dirt that is clogging them up. there's not much in these things that can just outright fail and cause them to leak other than dirt correct? i mean it's not like they failed spontaneously. thanks! obin

Back flush and pressure test with bench mounted fuel pump. No regulator.
Used solvent filled length of hose over tip with shop air to "back flush" many times.

I hear a drill and a 11/32 bit cleans them out quite nicely. Have you checked your coil wire?*

I've had to pull a 500 gallon tank around behind me before as I added on that mail order stuff that saves gas. My gas tank was overflowing!

Went to the Air and Space Museum in Wash DC in the late 70's. They had one of the engines from the Bf109 on display. I'm walking around it and notice this over size starter and figured I wanted a closer look so I jumped the ropes. Got up close and it had this oversized starter looked like it came right off of a VW including the oversize Bosch placard on it!
No it didn't have a rudder.
