crankshaft oil gear help

I decided to replace all the seals and bearing sleeves on my 1987 S Na this week. The only problem I have is the oil gear will not go back in the oil gear when I slide the new gear down the shaft. It just stops one past the seal but not far enough. I tried using a seal tool to drive it in with the main crank bolt, but it just stops. Any help would be appreciated before I pull all my hair out, thanks

Try rotating the drive gear slightly, the teeth on the gear and inside the oil pump have to interlock.

Yes, that is what it seems like. I tried rotating it and removed and reinstalled about 8 times. Each time, no joy... I'm afraid to wrench on it because I don't want to scratch it. I even tried to, tap it in with a drift punch... arrggg

put a washer against the gear, a spacer of some type (like the box end of a big wrench), the crank pulleys, and the crank bolt on in order.
use a big ratchet/socket to tighten the bolt down. the bolt turning will pull the sleeve into place.

Ya, I did that. It goes no where because the gears are not meshing up. Seems like I'm not the only one that had this problem before so hopefully if I keep turning it, I hope it will fall onto place.

Liquid Moly on the teeth of the drive gear made the difference for me.

So the problem is this. I had to stick a small screw driver or scribe inside and rotate the oil gears a few times until I was able to slide it in. All the pushing and twisting of the oil gear would have never aligned the gears. So I got it in place, unfortunately I screwed up the seal with all the other attempts. Now I need to get another. Hopefully I can slide the seal in place with the gear already in position.

Eh, I think that's a sure fire way to screwi up the seal.
