difference between 944 and 944S?

just wondering what the major differences between these are? I know the S has a 16V motor, but does it make that much power? I remember my old NA944 being pretty slow

They are a little quicker - HP is up to somewhere around 188. They have a bad reputation for maintenance issues. Personally I don't have a problem with them, but I do encourage you to know what you are getting into before you put money down

They are more expensive to maintain (parts cost more), but other than being a little quicker, you would be hard pressed to tell a difference between an S and a standard NA

i can fix anything myself, but what worries me is the cost of parts

The way the difference was explained to me, if you get a 944S instead of a 944, the power that you would have had at 4500RPM will now be at 2500RPM, but there is less top-end pull.

And I wouldn't call the 944 slow. it's just slow off the line

I test drove a 87 944S before I bought my 86 944na and I thought it was much quicker! It pulled quite hard after 3500 RPM's! Too bad the rest of the car wasn't in that good a shape, because it was much faster then a 944 na...I am glad I got the best maintained car in the long run though! Around 148 HP to 188 is a pretty big dif and it felt it behind the wheel as well.

I had my car dynoed before my accident, and I was running close to 160hp (159, to be exact) in my 83. I didn't do any accelleration tests on it, but the guy I bought it from (my mechanic) did. He claims 0-60 in 7.7, quarter mile in 15.7: pretty dead-on for a pre-1985 car.

I now have an "S" and I really can't tell too much of a power difference at all over my (former) '84 N/A. The only difference it above 4000PRMs - but I hardly ever get in that area anyways! Its weird, because more than a few of my friends whom I let drive both of them said they could feel the difference right away. But maybe they were just caught up in the moment and being over-enthusiastic.

Just my .02

Panzer: Yes, thats when the S comes alive! The extra valves really aid in the breathing from then all up the RPM range!
