M74 Sport suspesion in a 1986 951

Have non-sport now, thinking about changing it out to sport, what all is needed if it is standard suspension now?

...anyone have inexpensive used stuff to do it?

Thnaks

I think it's easier to replicate the configurations and their function than trying to find the actual parts used.

- Koni Sport adjustable shocks & struts (hacksaw front inserts)
- 200-lb Weltmeister springs
- 27mm rear torsion-bars

This is maximum discomfort for street car. If you're building a track-car, then you'd want coilovers all around with double those spring-rates. Which takes you to the limit of the Konis.

Shouldn't need to hack inserts for an '86. They went to the sealed units in '87.

Like anything Porsche I'd imagine the M474 comprised these different items:
Shock dampening rates
spring rates
torsion bars
sway bars

But as mentioned by Danno XYZ, replicating with modern parts would be easier than sourcing original M474 parts and then having them rebuilt.

The 944NA may have had rebuildable struts up to '86, but not the 951. Both of the '86 951s I've had were sealed, non-rebuildable struts. Just that the '86 had different angle on clamp-holes for early-offset. On my '86 951s, I actually used early 944 NA struts with gland-nut. Had to add 2mm shim to the spindle-clamp. This allowed me to use various inserts such as KYB, then Bilstein B6, and Koni 8611 dual-adjustables, etc. Also hacked off the spring-perch and added GC coilovers.

M474 is only Sport dampeners, shocks and springs. Sways and T-bars are the same.

I have a set of blown Koni struts that I can "update" and can procure Koni sport rear shocks for a decent price. Also, consider upgrading the sway bars. They are usually the best bang for the buck. I have some thicker bars as well. Send me an e-mail if interested.

TBone, if you want to wait till fall when I get back to AZ, we can go for a ride in my '89 M030 951, and then my 924S with 944 Spec suspension (licensed car). Huge difference between the two, and will give you an idea on what to do. The M030 'feels' the road quite a bit over a stock suspension. The 944 Spec will jar you to death on same road. Plus, it's quite fun up 89A to Jerome/Sedona~! Dave.
