Rear Hatch Lock Grommet

Got a new grommet for my 86 944 from Pelican. Not real sure how to get the lock cylinder out to replace it. Anyone replaced one before? I'm pretty sure I'm not the first one to replace one.

This?

It just pops out with a gentle plastic pry tool- mine had a crack and it came out easy.

Are you saying I don't have to remove the cylinder, just push the new one on? My old one is broken and missing a piece so getting it out is no problem.

just pry the old one out and slide the new one in. The lock cylinder can stay in place. I used a small flat tip screwdriver to push the new one in. Not really wise, since I could have scratched the paint, but slow and careful worked. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes to do.

The lock actuation arms (gold metal rods) need to be removed from the white plastic piece first. There is a certain orientation required to pull the rods from the white plastic piece to prevent you from breaking the plastic. It is not hard. Then you can remove the lock and slide on the new grommet.

The grommet can be done with the lock in place, takes a little time and a some lube always helps. Car wash soap would work.

I'll check out the "cylinder in place" method first and see if I want to attempt it. Fresh paint job so want to be careful not to scratch it. Otherwise will pull the cylinder.

Thanks

The paint and lube problem go away if you remove the lock.

I agree. The paint isn't even 2 weeks old yet so would like to remove the lock. Just haven't quite figured out getting the arms out without breaking the white plastic pieces yet.
